TORAH PORTION COMMENTARYWe are pleased to be able to share our students'
divrei Torot (Torah commentaries) with our community. Last Shabbat, seventh grade student Melila Chesick-Gordis (daughter of Robbie Chesick and Rabbi Yoni Gordis) celebrated her Bar Mitzvah at Or Shalom. Below is her analysis of what it's like to be a Ger (or stranger), based on parashat Mishpatim.
|
My parasha, the portion from the Torah that we just read, is Mishpatim, which translates to laws. This means that the entire parsha is filled with law after law after law. So there was a huge variety for me to choose to talk about.
There's one mitzvah or one commandment that stood out for me from the beginning. It Is "And you shall not mistreat a Ger, nor shall you oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt". A Ger, in biblical times was a person who would attach themselves to the Jewish people who was not Jewish. Now a days it could be an immigrant, a new classmate, member at work, or really anyone who is a newbie.
So what is this pasuk, this verse, telling us? It is trying to remind us that we were suffering in Egypt as immigrants once too, and we seem to forget about it. So I have a question for you. Raise your hand if you live in a different city than the one you were born in.

SCHOOL NEWS
Third and sixth grade students collaborated on a digital book report on Wednesday. They reviewed VTT Reads book selections. Displays are in the Grade 3 wing. All one needs is a mobile device with a QR reader to read their reviews. Neat, huh? See more photos here

Morah Myra's Grade 4 Shorashim students have started a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for a VTT alum who just had a lung transplant (due to cystic fibrosis) and currently cannot work. Their goal is to raise $500 to help him out. Anyone is free to donate! Click here to learn more

Thanks to VTT parent Lucas van den Berg, Preschool 4 students visited his aunt in The Netherlands, via Skype. The children were most impressed with her hanukkiyah, especially since she isn't even Jewish! The visit is part of their world studies curriculum. Our Grade 4 "Shorashim" class has been studying Jewish Identity and the development of the Jewish community here in Vancouver. VTT grandparent, Shirley Barnett, told us stories about her family roots from Russia and their immigration to Canada. We heard that her father Ben left home with a feather pillow, clean underwear, a loaf of bread, some jam and $7.00! Shirley showed us family photos and discussed the restoration work of the Jewish gravestones at the Mountainview Cemetery. We heard about many of the early Jewish settlers including the first mayor of Vancouver, Oppenheimer, who happened to be Jewish! Morah Orly and Ms Leisen's Grade Six Tikkun Olam classes are wrapping up their Identity unit by making time capsules. Inside they wrote who was important to them, their hopes and fears, a letter to themselves, current events and news articles and, in Cooper Shugarman's case, sending "Horsey" into the future. They included trends, fads and predictions. They even gave themselves advice..."I hope you didn't get a tattoo." The Grade is hoping to reconvene in Grade 11 or 12 and have a capsule-opening party together. Any parent wishing to host? Mark your calendars now! Grade 7s enjoyed a fruitful field trip to the Beatty Biodiversity Museum thanks to efforts of parent Sigal Balshine. Todah Rabah! Our Grade 7 basketball team had a great season and won their final game on Wednesday. Kol Ha'Kavod! Thanks to our two coaches: Mr. Lotzkar and Mr. Noel and all our parent drivers.
