HanNEWconnection: BUILDING BRIDGES ONE FAITH AT A TIME . . .
VTT students from Grade K-7 students prepared Hanukkah gift packages for Muslim, Catholic and First Nations students in our city. Each package included items related to Hanukkah with an explanation and a personalized greeting. The goal is for our students to learn about tolerance and to respect and value differences in one's community. Given children's natural curiosity and openness, this is the perfect time to build bridges with students of other faiths. The first set of packages were delivered yesterday to St. Augustine's Catholic School.

DOES YOUR HOME HAVE A CO2 DETECTOR?
Last week the Andison family had an extremely frightening close call with a carbon monoxide leak in their home. Their detector was NOT working. Thanks to an alert from their daughter, Julia (pictured above), they escaped their home in time and received emergency medical treatment at VGH and Children's Hospital. The consequences of this odorless, tasteless and colorless menace are deadly. Please make sure your home has a working detector and--if it's a plug in--check the expiration date! Available at London Drugs, Canadian Tire and Costco.

We are pleased to be able to share our students'
divrei Torot (Torah commentaries) with our community. Last week, seventh grade student Teah Bakonyi celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Israel. Below is her analysis on forgiveness from Parashat VaYishlach.

As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I would still be in prison." Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela knew that if he did not forgive the injustices that happened to him he would waste his energy seeking revenge, instead of focusing on human rights and uniting a divided country.
Mandela was jailed, humiliated and stripped of his freedom for 27 years, yet he found it in his heart to forgive his oppressors in hopes of making the world a better place.
This week we read parashat Va'yishlach. In the portion, Esav and Jacob, the brothers, meet up after 20 years of being separated. Esav was upset with Jacob because he had stolen his father's blessing and he had forced him to sell his birthright previously in the Torah. Now after two decades of being separated, the brothers meet.
The question is, will the brothers fight with each other or will Esav forgive jacob for all the bad thing he had done to him. Jacob does a few things to help insure that his brother will forgive him when they meet.
