We are pleased to be able to share our students'
divrei Torot (Torah commentaries) with our community. In early November, seventh grade student Alisa Bressler celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at Schara Tzedeck. She studied a portion of Pirke Avot with Rabbi Rosenblatt and Rivka-Leah Kamen. She explored the topic of friendship.
Becoming a Bat Mitzvah means literally becoming a daughter of mitzvot. In other words, a person of responsibility in the 613 areas of mitzvot; honoring parents, tzedakah, fasting on Yom Kippur, to name a few. This new responsibility means that I am taking on the ownership to watch over my own actions and accepting the consequences that come with that.
In preparation for this great responsibility, I studied Pirkei Avot with Rabbi Rosenblatt, and Rivka-Leah Kamen. It was an amazing experience and I learned so much. For those of you who are wondering, Pirkei Avot is Ethics of the Fathers. It is a collection of wise teachings. One of the teachings of Pirke Avot is "Ezehu Chacham? Ha'Lomed mi kol adam." Who is wise? The person who learns from everyone. This was a great opportunity to do exactly that.
The other benefit of Pirke Avot is that it emphasizes the need to constantly study Torah, not just leading up to your Bat Mitzvah. It was a good reminder that this has been the start of the process, not the end.
Pirkei Avot has so many brilliant ideas to teach us. For my Bat Mitzvah, I chose to speak about friendship. Friendship is a topic that all of us discuss a lot. Whether its having class discussions or telling your friends about how nice or mean somebody was to you, this topic comes up a lot.
How would you define a friend?

Dahlia's Story on Shaw TV

VTT's very own Dahlia Levitt was featured on Shaw TV this week. She will also be featured on Shaw TV Cable 4 during the Timmy's Christmas Telethon this Sunday Dec. 7th from 7-8:30 pm. Click the image above to view.
Our Grade 7 students have worked hard for weeks on their seminal Term I project, Roots and Wings. They are on display throughout the school. Feel free to peruse them or look at them HERE.
Grade 6 students learn the importance of our interdependence and interconnectedness in their social studies class with Mrs. Fisher. It's amazing how a ball of yarn can impart powerful lessons.
This week's faculty Lunch and Learn featured a discussion with world renown Mussar scholar, Alan Morinis. In a mere 30 minutes, Alan distilled the essence of Mussar for those in attendance: that we are each tasked with our own spiritual curriculum which can purify and elevate our souls toward a path of holiness. We also learned that, according to the Mussar tradition, everyone is capable of meaningful change.
