WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI BELLAS

Shabbat Parashat Sh'lah-L'kha

Moving Forward with Prepared Optimism

rabbi bellas

This week's parasha marks a milestone in the life of the children of Israel after having been freed from slavery in Egypt: the scouting out of the Promised Land. This section of the narrative is a very well-known story and, depending on how one looks at it, either famous or infamous. At the beginning of the parasha, God tells Moses to select one representative from each tribe, twelve men in all, to go out into the land and to take note of its important characteristics: the produce that grows there, the quality of the soil, is it wooded or barren, the types of cities (walled or unfortified), the numbers and strength of the inhabitants. The "spies" return from their expedition with some good news regarding the land and its produce; however, ten of twelve report that the Canaanites are a massive and strong people; the Israelites would not be able to defeat them. The only two voices of optimistic faith and calm were those of Y'hoshua bin Nun (Joshua) and Kalev ben Y'phuneh (Caleb). They declared that God would be with them in battle and that they would succeed in capturing the land. The dark report of the majority of the spies caused fear within the nation and the people again complained to Moses and God that they had been led through the wilderness for naught. It is this "sin" of faithlessness that brings the punishment of forty years of wandering in the wilderness upon this generation of Israelites. Only Joshua and Caleb were permitted to enter the Promised Land when it was over.

SCHOOL NEWS

mvp

Agency representatives were all smiles at Talmud Torah's Ceremony of Giving, the culmination of the Grade 7 Mitzvah of Valuing Philanthropy program, a tikkun olam initiative that, through active engagement and hands-on learning, teaches our B'Nei Mitzvah students about their obligations to help those outside their immediate circles of family and friends thus expanding their universe of obligation. Now in its seventh year, our Grade 7 students raised close to $25K to disburse to 27 very deserving agencies. (See JPG below of all the recipient agencies.) Special thanks to Rabbi Bellas, Ms. Davey and the program's creator and visionary, Ms. Sari Weintraub.

shuk
It felt like the real deal in our small gym on Wednesday, Grade 5 students recreated an Israeli Shuk to hawk their handmade wares and strike some bargains. The intention was for students to practice their Hebrew--in a setting mimicking something they'd encounter in the Holy Land. See all the fun and active photos here.

band

Kol Ha'Kavod to our Band Director, Jim Hopson, and Glee Club and Show Choir Director, Jennifer Chobotiuk, for patiently working with our 4-6 students this year to help them better appreciate the joy and beauty of music (and, of course, guide them to hone their skills). Our talented students entertained our audience either playing or singing favourite classics and contemporary hits. See all the musical photos here.
