KINDLY RESPECT OUR FACULTY& STAFF'S INSTRUCTIONAL AND WORK TIME
|
Our teachers and office staff do not have the time nor the resources to track down students to inform them of changes in plans, playdates or after-school pick up arrangements. Please confirm your plans with your child before the start of the school day. Calling into classrooms wastes valuable instructional time and paging onto the playground and throughout the school is very disruptive.
At the end of the day, our teachers and staff also have busy lives and families to care for. Please abide by end times and promptly pick up your children from the Learning Commons (no later than 4:30 p.m.), tutoring or any of the after school activities.

Thank you for respecting the time of all members of the VTT community.

TEACHER-LED PRO-D: TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OUR FACULTY'S MANY TALENTS & PASSIONS
Dear VTT Community, Wednesday's professional development day was a most exciting and inspiring day. Instead of bringing in outside experts, we sought to showcase the talents and expertise of our own faculty to teach, mentor and introduce new concepts and ideas to their colleagues. The workshops on offer were as follows: Session 1Interactive Whiteboards with Melissa AndersReading Power with Janet Kaplan & Meghan DaveyRecord Keeping and Assessment with Tamsin Morrell and Pat GirlingMaximizing Teachable Moments Through Solution-Focused Techniques with Abbie Loomer & Marina SteevesSession 2The Orton-Gillingham with Sandi EvansSocrative: A Student Response System w/ Becky ChanCreativity and Games in the Classroom with Orly GalUsing RazKids and A-Z Learning Optimally in the Classroom and Beyond with Nicole AndersenInteractive Whiteboards (Judaics) with Ronit ShorKol Ha'Kavod to all our teacher volunteers! Meanwhile, our preschool faculty and office staff spent eight grueling hours in first-aid training (many of them for the umpteenth time) and have the bruises to show for their intensive CPR training (chest compressions take a lot of work).
Shabbat Shalom!

WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI BELLAS Shabbat Parashat T'rumah/Shabbat Rosh Hodesh Adar I The Gift of Israel
As I sit down to write this week's d'var Torah, I am reflecting on just how fortunate we are to be living in a country like Canada, where democracy is legitimate, systematic, and creates a society where even though we are not always happy with decisions that are made or current societal conditions, we have the ability freely and openly to express ourselves through the democratic process. Last week, our Prime Minister represented these values on his visit to Israel, speaking up in support of the partnership between our country and the State of Israel. As struggles for Israel to make peace with its neighbors continue and the on-going internal conflicts in Middle Eastern countries that do not embrace democracy rage on, I am inspired to be even more appreciative of the miraculous way that Israel has been able to establish itself as a country based on democracy. A democratic Jewish state in Israel is not only a gift for the Jewish people, but also a light to the rest of the Middle East region and world. It is our responsibility as a global Jewish community - as did Prime Minister Harper - to stand side-by-side with Israel in these trying times, whether or not we fully agree with all of its domestic policy or religious decisions.

Local author, Ellen Schwartz (of Belinsky's Bagels fame), spoke to our Grade 6 students about what it takes to be a successful writer. Thanks to Isaac Waldman Library at the JCC for organizing this special talk. Our fifth graders love visiting their buddies in Preschool 4. Today, they were treated to a Biblical story, enthusiastically retold by student Evan Ariel. Based loosely on the Bravo show, "Work of Art," Grade 6 students were given a theme (Andy Warhol's Campbell soups) and working in teams they had two hours to complete their version of it. Can you say FUN?Grade Four's last day of art culminated in amazing, collaborative sculptures!
