NEW PPP JOBS FOR HANUKKAH!!! SERVERS NEEDED FOR FAMILY HANUKKAH DINNER
We were blown away by the astounding response to the PPP's request for Hanukkah volunteers. All 75 roles were filled within 4 days--that is AMAZING! Thank you to those of you who were able to volunteer. We truly appreciate you and your time.
As many of you know, the school has established a family Hanukkah dinner this year. They are expecting 250 people and we are confident that it is going to be a sold out event. The dinner is being catered by Susy Siegel, but we need 18 volunteers to help serve the meal.
The position begins at 5:30. As we cannot definitely say how long this volunteer role will take, we are offering 4 hours for these 18 positions even if we end up requiring your help for less time. This position is perfect for parents who are looking to obtain volunteer roles during non-workday hours.
To sign up to volunteer at this event, please click here
Please note that your services will be required throughout the meal and there will be no opportunity for you to participate in the dinner or entertainment portion of the evening. As such, please only sign up to volunteer at this event if you and your family were not planning on attending.
Thank you again for all of your help.
Warmly,
Marnie Greenwald and Joanna Wasel PPP Co-Chairs
P.S. Don't forget to check out our Hanukkah sale in the back hallway of the school beginning next week. ____________________________________________

Weekly Torah Portion (Parashat Ha'Shavua) with Rabbi Matthew BellasShabbat Parashat Vayishlah Loving-kindness is Good for the Heart and Soul
On Tuesday morning, faculty members from the five Jewish day schools in Greater Vancouver gathered together for a most enlightening and enriching professional development day. By now, I am sure many of you have heard about Dr. Wendy Mogel and her message about raising resilient children. She served as our first keynote speaker and was most engaging and entertaining. After a short break, the gathered educators heard a presentation by our second keynote speaker, Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, an Applied Developmental Psychologist and Associate Professor at UBC, entitled "Educating the Heart." Her message spoke to the essence of what it means to experience fully Jewish education in a Jewish day school. Most schools have a clear focus on the cognitive and intellectual development of students. Children must learn certain bodies of knowledge and skills in order to find success as they go on to advanced education and careers. Dr. Schonert-Reichl argues, however, that schools who do not also focus on the education of the heart are only doing part of their job and are actually costing their students their greatest opportunity to live up to their fullest potential. Her research has shown that teaching and learning about and then performing acts of loving-kindness lead to greater physical health of the heart and body and open students up to more engaged academic learning. Education of the mind, heart, and soul are the bedrock of Jewish day school education and are an outgrowth of Torah.

PLANNING A BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR YOUR CHILD?
In accordance with our school policy (as outlined in the Parent Handbook), we respectfully request that birthday parties not be scheduled on Shabbat or Festivals. We also encourage families to schedule B'nei Mitzvah parties to begin after the conclusion of Shabbat on a Saturday night. Thank you for respecting VTT's pluralistic environment :)

SCHOOL NEWS
Preschool 4-1 students proudly show off the world they created as part of their unit on "Breishit" (the creation story).
Lito Sacueza, our loyal custodian and member of our traffic team, has steadily been returning the school's empties for the last couple of months. The refunds recently reached $100--all of which he gave back to the school in the form of a donation to VTT's Campus Campaign. Todah Rabah, Lito!
Kol Ha'Kavod to Kindergarten 2 for donating pajamas and kids' books to Jewish Family Services as their mitzvah initiative this month.
The look of discomfort on Dr. Wendy Mogel's face is what happens when she describes her formula for parental disaster: high intelligence + creative imaginations = PARANOIA. According to Dr. Mogel, there's never been a safer time to be a child. Parents need to relax, give their kids space and independence, and allow them to make decisions and make mistakes. The Babylonian Talmud teaches us that we have an obligation to teach our children to swim. This is to prepare them to be self-sufficient and self-reliant beings. Dr. Mogel's humour, combined with 30+ years of experience as a psychologist, made for an entertaining and thought-provoking evening of wise advice.
