Weekly Torah Portion (Parashat Ha'Shavua) with Rabbi Matthew BellasShabbat Parashat Toldot Esau's Tears
Over the course of the past week, our Grade 7 students have begun their work on their "Roots & Wings" family history projects as part of our Tikkun Olam curriculum. Each year, when our graduating students arrive to school with their completed projects and put them out for display, the members of our school community are blown away by the quality of the work and the effort that has gone into them. They really are a sight to see and this year, with fifty-eight Grade 7 students, we expect our most fulsome display yet! However, what we teach our students as they are working toward the completion of the project is "not to lose the forest for trees." When engaging in a project that takes several weeks to complete and time to design and assemble in unique and creative ways, it is easy to lose focus on WHY they are engaging in the enterprise in the first place. What are the lessons they are intended to learn? That family history and stories contribute significantly to your sense of personal identity and that each of our family histories are part of the collective memory of the Jewish people. While we celebrate and work at developing and understanding our own identities, we are all part of something much greater: The Jewish People. Once we grasp these two concepts (our roots), our senses of self, our confidence, and our characters will be stronger, giving us even greater opportunities to fly (our wings) in the future.

SCHOOL NEWS
According to these Preschool 4 students, today's messy art activity was "the most fun they've ever had!" They enjoyed it so much, in fact, that they started a new "oeuvre" moments after this photo was shot.
Despite having the largest grade in the school at 80 students, Grade 3 pupils led a moving and respectful Remembrance Day assembly for their peers in Grades
1 & 2. Kol HaKavod to their teachers for orchestrating the group and teaching them so well!
And you thought keyboarding in English was challenging! Grade 2 students are gaining familiarity with a Hebrew keyboard so they can type the stories they created.
Through song, dance and poetry, our Grade 6 students commemorated the solemn occasions of Remembrance Day and Kristallnacht for their peers in Grades 4-7. Everyone in attendance displayed the required decorum and respect. 1C students had fun frolicking in the fallen leaves in preparation for a special Hebrew project. Luckily, the rains held off long enough for the students to enjoy.

The Junior Band had a special visitor this week. Saul Berson, a renowned woodwind player in BC and community member, came to our school in the wee hours of the morning to help our students improve their technique. Much appreciated! VTT parent Sandra Harris gave our Games Room a big boost this week with the purchase of some great games to keep our students busy at lunch during the rainy winter months. Todah Rabah!

Rose Dupaya works diligently every day managing the huge inventory of our lost and found. It is now full and unlabelled items may soon be discarded. There are tons of valuable items just waiting to go back to their respective homes. Please claim your stuff ASAP! Fears and Giggles: A Day as a Jew in Malmo, Sweden (written by an Irishman) Do you know when the first female rabbi was ordained? How about when the first Bat Mitzvah was performed? Check out the Jewish History timeline. Hover your mouse over the event in history and a detailed description of it pops up. Most of you know Sally Piccinato as our knitter extraordinaire. Her sewing skills are just as fabulous, and she often puts her talents to very practical uses, such as creating weighted blankets for people with autism. Now she's sewn a hot water bottle "cozy" for our students so they can avoid the rubber lying against their skin. Thank you, Sally!
