MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
VTT Board of Directors bids adieu and welcomes (new) president
 |
Michelle Gerber, now a relieved "Past President"
|
Dear VTT Community,
Last Sunday, our Board of Directors gathered to hold its Annual General Meeting. The AGM is also a time to recognize the contributions of departing Board members. This year, we say Todah Rabah to Paul Pulver and Stephanie Vellins, both lawyers who offered sound legal counsel and advice during their terms.
Michelle Gerber, President for the last two years, will remain active on the Board, but hands over the reigns to her current co-President, Bill Schonbrun, and Sue Hector, who returns to fill the shoes of President for a second time (the last of which was seven or eight years ago). Known for her "unstoppable dedication and humour," Michelle worked tirelessly for the school during her two years at the Board's helm--all the while fulfilling equally important roles as wife and mother to three daughters. VTT was the lucky beneficiary of Michelle's infectious energy and passion, and on behalf of the entire VTT community, I wish to express a sincere and heartfelt Todah Rabah for her service to our school.
| Shabbat Shalom!
Cathy Lowenstein, M.Ed.

Weekly Torah Portion (Parashat Ha'Shavua) with Rabbi Matthew BellasShabbat Parashat Toldot Esau's Tears
This week's parasha is our clearest biblical episode of sibling rivalry and parental favoritism. Rebecca gives birth to twin boys, Esau and Jacob. Esau is the firstborn who grows up to be a man of the earth, a hunter and gatherer, hairy and primitive. The Torah teaches that he is loved (i.e. preferred) by his father Isaac. Jacob is born immediately after Esau, his hand grasping on to his older brother's heel. He is more of a homebody, preferred by his mother Rebecca. The result of these opposing parental loyalties is the ruse that has an elderly, blind, and infirm Isaac being tricked into giving his younger son Jacob the blessing that he had intended for his beloved firstborn son Esau. There are so many questions that we can ask of this text and of its characters, who have been held up as heroes and role models for the many generations of future Israelites and Jews during the past four thousand years. Most often, these questions are asked about Isaac (Did he really know what was going on?), Rebecca (How could she be so conniving against her own flesh and blood child?), and Jacob (Why did he just go along with the plot and not question his mother? Why was he chosen as the patriarch of the twelve tribes with this deceitful act on his record?). However, Esau is a figure who has been painted as an evil enemy throughout Jewish history and, therefore, much maligned and ignored as one of our ancestors. He deserves to be brought out of the shadows of rabbinic vilification and used as a model from whom we can learn as well.

SCHOOL NEWS
The concept of "tzedakah" is taught right from Preschool 3 at VTT. Today, our three year olds brought non-perishable food items to donate to the Jewish Food Bank. Join our preschoolers and help fill the box! Cooking oil and applesauce are most welcome to help those less fortunate celebrate Hanukkah.
Many thanks to community member Esther Moses for sharing her insights and experiences about growing up in India with our Grade 5 students. Fifth graders are reading the novel Iqbal in class. It's a fictional account of the real Iqbal Masih who was sold into slavery at a carpet factory. He inspires the other children to look to a future free from toil.
Esther Moses grew up in Mumbai (Bombay) in the Jewish community. She eventually made aliyah to Israel, and after eight years, moved to Vancouver. She is married to Richard Wood of BC Kosher.
Cantor Lawrence Szenes-Strauss of Beth Israel visits our Grade 4 classes weekly. In addition to enriching our students musically, he teaches them about the weekly Torah portion and the Amidah prayer. He will also be helping our students prepare their Hanukkah songs for the event with Richmond Jewish Day School.
Today Dr. Teri Fisher visited students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 to conclude the "Be Active Every Day" program. Don't be surprised if your children come home today and declare that sweet drinks and foods are a big no-no! Fourth grade students Ben Gutman and Tristan Georges show off the clock they bought Morah Etti to symbolize how fast the time flies in her class. Based on the children's book "Tomorrow's Alphabet," students in Kindergarten and Grade 3 collaborated on a literacy project.

Todah Rabah!

Michal in the Learning Commons would really appreciate help in the library. She is seeking a couple of parent volunteers who can shelve books and help maintain order and organization in one of the most heavily used areas of the school. Volunteers are welcome any day except Tuesdays. Contact Michal at msitbon@talmudtorah.com if you're available. This is a PPP job that works best if you're willing to make a weekly commitment. Even one hour a week can make a huge difference!
