MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
VTT receives high marks from Ministry of Education Inspection Team
Dear VTT Community,
Every six years the BC Ministry of Education sends a team of experienced school leadership professionals to VTT to conduct a thorough inspection and evaluation of every aspect of our educational programming and school administration to ensure we are in compliance with the Ministry's standards and practices. The inspectors completed their assessment on Wednesday afternoon and, I am pleased to report, that VTT had an exemplary inspection!
Calling themselves "richly blessed" for the opportunity to see a Jewish day school in action, they were impressed by the high expectations set by our faculty, the evident collaboration of our grade teams, the way we live our mission, vision and values which shine through in both the Judaic and general studies components of our curriculum, and the abundant resources (both physical and human) that are offered to our students for optimum learning conditions. As leaders of faith-based schools themselves, they found it even more meaningful and rewarding to be at our school to observe the similarities and crossovers.
Preparing for the inspection took months of work. I am deeply indebted to all the teachers, the office team and the rest of the leadership team for their contributions to this effort. A passing grade, however, is no excuse to rest on our laurels. The measure of an exciting, progressive place of learning means we will continue in our pursuit of high standards and innovations in teaching and learning.
| Shabbat Shalom!

SNAPCHAT. ASK FM. INSTAGRAM.
Do you know what your children are up to on social media?
Did you know that Snapchat--the latest social media youth craze--processes 350 million photos every day? Although people believe the shots "disappear" after 10 seconds, they are actually stored on the company's servers. How secure do you feel knowing that your children's "selfies" (self-portraits) are owned by a corporation? Do you have any idea what Snapchat intends to do with photos of your children? These are some of the questions posed by Jesse Miller, social media educator and founder of Mediated Reality.
Mr. Miller addressed our Grades 4-7 students on Monday afternoon to alert them to the perils and hazards of social media. He demonstrated how posting an innocent photo on Instagram can allow a stranger to gain access to a host of information about the user, including where they go to school, where they live and where they spend their free time. He repeated this demonstration for our parents--much to everyone's disbelief. "Privacy settings" are no guarantee, especially when the photo is "tagged" (or has a hash # tag).
So what are parents to do?
Banning social media, though desirable, is not likely achievable. Instead, users need to become thoughtful and responsible users of tools that can both be curses and blessings. One question parents can ask children is: "If what you are about to post or text is something you wouldn't want your parents to read or see, then it's probably best not to do it." This could be their litmus test. Parents should also explore why their children need a public forum to post all the minutiae of their lives. What need is this filling? What are the risks of doing this? If a stranger approached us and "liked" us at a bus stop, we would consider this creepy. Why don't we consider this behaviour similarly when complete strangers are "liking" us and our posts? In addition to Mr. Miller's website, parents may also wish to visit mediasmarts.ca. P.S. ASK FM, a forum where youth anonymously pose (often salacious) questions, has no redeeming qualities or merit. Please ensure your children do NOT ever use this unsafe and unmoderated forum.

Weekly Torah Portion (Parashat Ha'Shavua) with Rabbi Matthew BellasShabbat Parashat Hayyei Sarah Should Jewish Families Celebrate Halloween?
Living as Jews in the modern world today is, in many ways, much more difficult than it was when we lived in small autonomous communities, free from the influences and lifestyles of larger surrounding cultures. Life in an open and pluralistic country makes us just one of the many patches in the quilted fabric of Canada, exposed both to all that is good about freedom and democracy and to customs, practices, and holidays that are not our own. As Jews who choose to integrate ourselves into the modern world, we must find a balance between emphasizing our Jewish uniqueness and finding comfort with what larger society has to offer. A decision about Halloween is one that we must make every year. Four thousand years ago, a man named Abram (later Abraham) faced a similar dilemma. He grew up in a land where pagan religions were the norm, while he had come to a realization that he was different and believed differently. Abram realized the concept of the one and only God and, after having acted upon his new-found understanding of the world, was spoken to by God. Just two Shabbatot ago, we read from the Torah about how he was told that he must leave his land, the place where he was born, and his father's house for a new place where he could settle his family in a new faith without the influences of the larger pagan population. Abram needed to create a safe distance between himself and the pagan peoples and nations in order to ensure the birth and on-going existence of the new "ONE-GOD BELIEF." Over the course of his lifetime, Avraham establishes a new family and new faith tradition through his covenant with God. As a result of Avraham's pioneering, brave and faithful choice, we exist as a Jewish people today.
