VTT'S MVP PROGRAM GRANTS OVER $30K IN DONATIONS AT ANNUAL CEREMONY OF GIVING
 | Coming full circle: David Rosengarten, Class of 2007, accepts a cheque for $1,135 from the VTT Class of 2013, as a junior Board member representative for Magen David Adom. He will volunteer for the agency in Israel this summer. |
Now in its sixth year, VTT's Grade 7 students raised a record-breaking $31,480, which they generously allocated to 28 local, national and international agencies all working towards the goal of tikkun olam (repair of the world) to fulfill the following ethical mitzvoth (commandments): Healing the Sick, Supporting Those in Adversity, Overcoming Limitations, Love of Israel, Saving a Life, Pursuing Justice, Pursuing Education, Caring for the Environment, Safeguarding Your Health and Well-Being and Honouring the Elderly. To read more about this innovative program that prepares our students to become both leaders in their communities AND philanthropists, click this link. INVITATION TO JOIN VANCOUVER TALMUD TORAH'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND COMMITTEES
Each year, VTT parents and members of our community join our school's faculty and administration to support and participate in an incredibly important shared mission: to deliver the best quality education possible to our children.
Many individuals spend years, and countless hours, devoting their time, energy and love to this mission, and the results are evident everywhere you look. We continue to expand and evolve and, as always, we need your help and support to do so.
Much of the work occurs within committees consisting of faculty, administration, directors and volunteers. These committees perform work that often has deep, profound and impactful results.
At this time, we are seeking volunteers that are prepared to assist on the following committees:
- Strategic Development
- Finance
- Communications
- Strategic Planning
- Technology
We are also reviewing nominations for our Board of Directors for the 2013-2014 school year, as well as future years.
If you're ready to get involved and help make a difference, please email Sue Hector from the Nominations Committee of our Board of Directors at suehector@telus.net and indicate your areas of interest and background by June 29th.

MVP REFLECTIONS FROM RABBI MATTHEW BELLAS
In collaboration with my Tikkun Olam colleague Morah Ronneat, I again had the privilege this year to guide Grade 7 students through the Mitzvah of Valuing Philanthropy program. Below are some excerpts from the speech I delivered at Wednesday's Ceremony of Giving.

This week's Torah portion is named Hukkat. The Hebrew word Hok is one of the terms used for the English word "LAW." In Jewish tradition, we have two types of laws: hukkim and mishpatim. Our Sages of old wondered why it was necessary to have two words that essentially meant the same thing. Of course, there had to be something that differentiated these two terms one from the other. What we learn is that mishpatim are laws that come with a logical reason for or behind them and hukkim do not. They are simply commanded to us by our tradition and demand our obedience.
Today, as we gather together for this Ceremony of Giving, we are marking our Grade 7 students' learning of the difference between the hukkim and the mishpatim and their efforts and accomplishments at having fulfilled just one ethical commandment of their choice each in connection with becoming bar and bat mitzvah, coming of age in the eyes of the Jewish community. Through their collective efforts to fulfill these mitzvot, our students have transformed the theoretical learning of Tikkun Olam - the work of repairing the world - into a reality.
This is indeed the role that the Tikkun Olam curriculum and the Mitzvah of Valuing Philanthropy project serve for our school and in this community. Through the lenses of Jewish values and obligations and global citizenship, MVP seeks to guide the graduating class through a journey of exploration of self and community, culminating in a project which allows them to put their new understandings into action.
Shabbat Shalom!

SIBLINGS RAISE OVER $1200 FOR VTT CAMPUS CAMPAIGN

Grade 4 student Abbey Kape and her brother, Grade 2 student Matthew Kape, raised over $1200 on June 12th for the VTT Campus Campaign. The two held a kosher candy sale during pick-up, with the bags going for a minimum donation of $4. Sales were brisk and the bags were all but sold out in 45 minutes.
The entire initiative was driven by Abbey, who wanted to do something to support the new school. She and Matthew packed the bags themselves and hand made all the posters and advertising at the table. They were incredible salespeople, and even enlisted the help of another Grade 4 student, Lola Belzberg.
Campaign leadership is so grateful to Abbey, Matthew, Lola and all the other VTT students, families and members of our community who have supported the expanded and revitalized VTT. Todah rabah!
It's not too late to make your gift - please contact 604-736-7307 x 3478 or email info@securingthefuture.ca to donate today.

How many 6 and 7 year olds do you know who can tango? Morah Orly's Grade 1A & 1B students shook up the dance floor and more (all in Hebrew, of course) at the annual Siddur celebration. To see more adorable photos, click here. Morah Judith's 2A & 2B students also delighted their parents and grandparents at the annual Torah celebration, another all Hebrew (rak b'ivrit) display. See the photos here. It was a bittersweet ending to a very special year. Grade 1 and Grade 7 buddies gathered for the annual Teddy Bear picnic, the culminating activity of our extremely popular Buddies program. Each first grader received a special book, created and written entirely by their seventh grade friend. See photos from the beautiful afternoon here. Preschool 3 students went on a Jewish symbol hunt throughout the school this week seeking to identify Jewish themes, markers, and decorations in the halls and classrooms. Every year our Spring Concert gets better and better. For the second year in a row, our glee club, show choir and instrument club joined the Jr. and Sr. Bands for an evening of song and music. Sadly, we bid farewell to four band members who have been devoted to those early morning practices for the last four years: Josh Bergida, Liron Gertsman, Teddy Hector, and Eddie Reay. Special thanks to Band Teacher Jim Hopson and Music Specialist Jennifer Chobotiuk.
See the photos here Yesterday VTT's Library monitors were treated to a pizza lunch to thank them for their hard work in the Learning Commons this year. In addition, three lucky students won a $25 gift card each to Kidsbooks (special thanks to Kidsbooks for donating two of these cards): Noa Haber, Hannah Lando, and Hannah Casseres. We thank all of our amazing students who volunteered their time this year to help out with various duties in the Learning Commons! You are outstanding and we are proud of you!!!
