INVITATION TO JOIN VANCOUVER TALMUD TORAH'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND COMMITTEES

board

Each year, VTT parents and members of our community join our school's faculty and administration to support and participate in an incredibly important shared mission: to deliver the best quality education possible to our children.

Many individuals spend years, and countless hours, devoting their time, energy and love to this mission, and the results are evident everywhere you look. We continue to expand and evolve and, as always, we need your help and support to do so.

Much of the work occurs within committees consisting of faculty, administration, directors and volunteers. These committees perform work that often has deep, profound and impactful results.

At this time, we are seeking volunteers that are prepared to assist on the following committees:

-   Strategic Development

-   Finance

-   Communications

-   Strategic Planning

-   Technology

We are also reviewing nominations for our Board of Directors for the 2013-2014 school year, as well as future years.

If you're ready to get involved and help make a difference, please email Sue Hector from the Nominations Committee of our Board of Directors at suehector@telus.net and indicate your areas of interest and background by June 29th.

WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI MATTHEW BELLAS

Shabbat Parashat Korah-Shabbat Rosh Hodesh Tammuz

Responding to Rebellion

In this week's parasha, Korah challenges the legitimacy of the leadership of Moses and Aaron over the Israelites. He comes to Moses and asks why it is that he and Aaron have been elevated over the rest of the nation, for God has taught that "the entire people is a holy nation." Two hundred and fifty people gather behind Korah, Datan and Aviram in this rebellion against God's chosen leaders for the Children of Israel. Certainly, this is an extremely bold move made by Korah and his followers and one must consider what we can learn from both the source of his anger and the method by which God and Moses handle the situation.

Rashi, the pre-eminent commentator on the Bible, notes that Korah's rebellion is not necessarily a complete act of hubris and selfishness. He reminds us that when the Torah first speaks about Korah in this parasha, his entire lineage is given. This is done so that we are aware that Korah is, in fact, a first cousin to Moses and Aaron, one with a very legitimate claim to a high office of leadership among the people since he is the oldest son of one of four brothers in the tribe of Levi, Moses' and Aaron's father being the oldest of the four, Korah's father being the second oldest. Therefore, Korah's questioning of the appointment of Elitzaphan, the son of the fourth brother, as the chief of the family tribe instead of him, does have merit. What we must take away from this, perhaps, new understanding of Korah's rebellion is that when individuals present what are or appear to be rebellious challenges and questions to us, there is a very good chance that there are good reasons behind them. We may not agree with them or the reasons may make sense only to those who are coming to us, but we must be mindful of them. Keeping this in mind will help us to be able to deal effectively with the "rebellion" which has been raised, no matter how big or small. Read more online...

SCHOOL NEWS

torah celebration
Who knew that second graders could converse and perform in Hebrew so effortlessly? The first of two Torah celebrations took place on Thursday, where students acted, danced and sang their way through the six days of creation culminating in the holy day of Shabbat. See all the photos here.

cake
They may have graduated from VTT last year, but these three alumnae are always willing to lend a hand. Thank you to Shayna, Justine, Talia and Elle (not pictured) for making beautiful cakes for the Torah celebration.
(Their Torah cake creation can be viewed in the link above.)

sports day
The wet hair and fogged up glasses meant another rained out Sports Day. Thankfully, the tug o' war went ahead as planned, with Team Moshe claiming ultimate victory. To see photos from the students' amazing teamwork, click here.
The final tug o' war round saw VTT's teachers go head to head with the winning Grade 6 & 7 teams. Much to everyone's surprise, the adults handily beat the students. Perhaps having VTT alum, Itamar Sitbon, on their side made all the difference! Don't forget to view the photos. The expressions are priceless!

food bank
Some Grade 6 students did a mitzvah delivering food for JFSA's Jewish Food Bank. This is an important community resource and all donations of food and money are most welcome and appreciated!

ramzor
Photos do not do justice to the unbelievable creativity of our Grade 4 students for their "ramzor" (stoplight) projects. To support the grade's theme of community and inclusion, each student read a book (in Hebrew) supporting this topic. The students then had to summarize the story, explain the book's solution and then suggest an alternative ending. Though done exclusively in Hebrew, the learning outcomes apply to both general and Judaic studies. Click here to see all the projects.

triumf
Grade 6 students visited the TRIUMF facility at UBC to complement their science studies on alternative forms of energy. Special thanks to parent Martin Gerber for facilitating the field trip.

saleema
Our parents always appreciate an evening with Saleema Noon, sexual health educator, for deconstructing difficult conversations into rational, thoughtful and "scientific" language. Saleema and her team will be visiting our K through 7s next Friday, June 14th.

josh
Mazal tov to Joshua Switzer and his Thunderbirds Atom C4 Dynamite team who were undefeated in 12 playoff games to win the championship banner.
