GRADE 7 STUDENTS RAISE OVER $30K FOR MVP!
Now in its sixth year, VTT's Mitzvah of Valuing Philanthropy (MVP) Program achieved a new milestone by raising $30K for this teen philanthropy initiative. Every penny raised will directly benefit local, national and international non-profit organizations. In the photo above, 7A students, representing half the grade, hold signs displaying the logo of their chosen agency. Students will personally award cheques to agency representatives at the Ceremony of Giving on Wednesday, June 12 at 1 p.m. A new 5K Lag Ba'Omer fundraising run, from VTT to Kits Beach, brought greater visibility to the program and generated new support. Todah Rabah to the students, parents and donors to this most impactful endeavor. Some of the Grade 7 participants in the Lag Ba'Omer 5K run. (They all completed it in under 30 minutes--from VTT to Kits Beach.) A special thank you to Mark Gurvis, Executive Director of Jewish Federation, for describing the functions and responsibilities of a budget and allocations committee. Grade 7 students will assume this important (and tough) task in the coming weeks as they begin to thoughtfully allocate the $30K they have raised for MVP.

WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI MATTHEW BELLAS
Shabbat Parashat B'midbar
The Meaning of a Name
This week begins the reading of the book of B'midbar/Numbers, the fourth book of Torah. The first large section of the reading is dedicated to the performance of a national census. Its purpose was to collect an account of the males of military age: twenty years old and above. In order to conduct the census, tribal heads were appointed to supervise the counting within each tribe. These "deputies" are listed by name near the very beginning of the parasha.
While going over the text of this week's reading, it would be very easy to glance over the names of the tribal heads, considering them to be of minimal importance to the overall content of the parasha. However, if one looks closely at the names and makes an attempt to understand what they mean, one will discover some beautiful messages embedded within them. Take these for example:
Elitzur: My God is a rock
Sh'lumi'el: God is my peace/wholeness
Natan'el: Gift from God
Eli'av: God is my father
Elishama: My God who heard
Avidan: My father the judge
Ahi'ezer: My brother my helper

Shabbat Shalom!

SCHOOL NEWS
VTT's Glee Club, under the direction of Jennifer Chobotiuk, brought cheer and smiles to the residents of Louis Brier at their annual Mother's Day Tea. Special thanks to Elana Jacobson for accompanying on piano. Yishar Ko'ach to faculty members Michele Zychlinski, Megan Davey and Sylvester Noel for completing the BMO half marathon on Sunday. It was Michele's first time, Megan's second time and Sylvester's third. They even met their goal of completing the 14km in under two hours. Way to go! On Wednesday, students sat for the final round of online math challenges as part of the worldwide Caribou Math Contest. Kol Ha'Kavod to those students who elected to participate this year. Above is a replica of the Jaffa Gate, made out of sugar cubes by fourth grade student Jonah Ezekiel. Click here to see all the fantastic interpretations of Jerusalem's ancient gates and stones--a joint project between VTT and our sister school in Israel's northern Galilee panhandle, Alei Givah. Above is an example of a second grade student using technology, in this case an iPad, to demonstrate understanding of a Jewish concept, in this case the story of creation, specifically the third day of creation. Translation: "What else did Hashem do (create) on the third day?" Faculty from our early childhood, primary and intermediate departments spent their lunch hours consulting on space planning with the architects for our new campus. Though funds are still being raised, it is critical to begin these conversations to meet an ambitious deadline of breaking ground in June 2014. Mazal tov to fourth grade students Maya McNamara and Mikal Stein as well as fifth grader Jessie Miller, the PRO1dancers at the Landing Dance Company for earning the second highest score (95.5%) at the Synergy Dance Competition out of 690 routines, across all age groups and styles, for their Jazz routine "Conduct Yourself Accordingly". They were then invited to dance at the showdown on Saturday night where they got the award for highest Scoring Level 2 Group. You can watch their dance here. Congratulations to Grade 7 student Elise Jampolsky who recently auditioned for a part in the Alberta Ballet's production of the Nutcracker. She earned a role as a Palace Page and will be on stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre December 28, 29, 30 and 31st, 2013. As a culmination to the study of ancient Egypt, Grade 7 students came to class dressed as an ancient Egyptian character. They celebrated with traditional Egyptian food (humus, pita and olives from Nava) while each student shared their expert knowledge of his/her character.
