GRADE ONE: USING LITERACY TO BUILD MORAL DEVELOPMENT

kevin henke
Grade 1 teachers Ms. Kaplan and Mrs. Ariel have been reading the books of children's author Kevin Henkes to impart life lessons. The concluding language arts activity involved parents sharing their family's motto. Some submissions included:

"Be calm and carry on."
"You have to do what you have to do before you do what you want to do."
"Being happy makes other people happy."
"If you do good things for others, good things happen to you."
"Treat people the way you want them to treat you."
"When someone is in trouble, you should try to help them."
"If I am respectful to others, they will be respectful to me."
"Always try your best!"
WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI BELLAS

Shabbat Parashat Mishpatim/Shabbat Sh'kalim

"Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach him to fish and he can eat for the rest of his life."

(A reflection on the Hebrew Free Loan Association

Whenever I think about the difference between tz'dakah/charity and hesed/acts of loving-kindness, I am reminded of this famous quotation. In Jewish tradition, tz'dakah and hesed have developed two quite different definitions. Tz'dakah is the giving of money, while hesed is the giving of time, effort, and a commitment to compassionate and loving support. In the Torah, however, as we learn in this week's parasha/Torah portion, tz'dakah and hesed are actually intertwined. When the Torah commands the Israelites and their descendents to help the poor, it does not talk about donating spare change. First, it commands us to provide substantial enough monetary loans that the individual will be able to get back onto his or her own two feet and, second, requires that such loans to fellow Israelites/Jews be interest free. The intention of this system is to provide members of our community who are in need with both the financial support necessary to acquire basic needs and, perhaps, invest in starting a business or other form of employment and the emotional support to feel independent and have a rehabilitated self-esteem. So you see, the Torah combines both tz'dakah and hesed into one integrated support system.

Thank you, VTT community, for your overwhelming support during the Scholastic Book Fair! We are excited to report that together we raised almost $3,000 for new books and other resources for the Learning Commons. We could not have done it without Suzanne Ferara and her crew of fabulous parent volunteers.

Thank you also to the students in grades 5-7 who gave book talks and helped out during the fair - a heartfelt TODAH RABAH to all!!!

A message from Mr. Cohen: "Three years ago, Eric supported me on this ride to conquer cancer even before he knew he had this disease. In his blessed memory, I am committed to this cause and hope that you will consider supporting me. Click this link to learn more."

WOULD YOU LIKE TO EARN PPP HOURS IN YOUR PJs?

volunteer

We're almost there! The final piece to publishing the new and improved Jewish Directory is performing simple data entry. You can do this from home, in your PJs, at night, and whenever the opportunity arises. The Directory, published every two years, is a major fundraiser for the school bringing revenue to support all the "extras" at VTT. The more people we have helping out, the quicker we can send the final product to the printer.

This is an EASY way to earn PPP hours. Please email Belinda if you can help: belindam@shaw.ca
