OUR GOAL IS 100%. WE NEED EVERYONE! VTT Campus Campaign - Parent Appeal
A Personal Message from Lisa Boroditsky and Stacey Kape
When we were approached to co-chair the Parent Appeal of the VTT Campus Campaign, we both hesitated. Not because we didn't believe in the cause - we do, wholeheartedly, and have already made our commitments. And not because we were afraid of the workload. (It's a lot!) It was because we know how hard raising funds can be, and how difficult it is to ask for money.
As parents of current and past VTT students, like you, we see daily why we need an expanded and revitalized VTT. We see our children crammed in hallways, gulping down lunch in 20 minute intervals, issues needing to be addressed on the playground and much more. We also see the incredible sense of community that makes VTT so unique. We see the commitment, dedication and passion of the faculty and staff who work to deliver a quality education, while facing such challenges from an old building. We see how VTT shapes the lives of our children, for the better. We see how much better it will be in the future when the new campus is completed.
It is why we took on these roles. We all inherited this school. We did not have to build it. Our grandparents, our parents and members of our community did. They believed, like we do, that Jewish education is fundamental to strong, vibrant communities, and strong, proud, caring individuals.
We know all of you feel the same way. It is why we are asking you to step up and support the VTT Campus Campaign. We are asking you to help us build on the foundation of those that came before.
When we launched the Parent Appeal in December, we announced a goal of 100% participation. We are still aiming for that. Every single gift to this campaign matters, and while we hope that every family will make a significant gift, we are asking all families to make a gift. Every dollar gets us closer to our goal of $20 million and the higher our participation numbers, the more we can leverage our commitments to secure support from the broader community.
Time is of the essence. The campaign needs to raise the majority of funds by April 30, 2013 in order to break ground in June of 2014. If we don't get there by this April, we will lose an entire year of construction and costs will increase.
Right now, we are in the process of reaching out to every VTT family. We have 50 volunteers who are giving their time to make these calls, and often, they are dreading making these calls more than you are dreading receiving them! These are fellow parents, giving their time because of their belief in Talmud Torah and the VTT Campus Campaign. We ask you to not only be kind to them, but please return their calls.
Our goal is 100%. We have achieved 27%. Every gift matters. Please return your canvasser's calls or contact the Development Office to make your gift directly.
We thank those families who have already made their gifts. We've come a long way already, and together we can do this. Please join our team!
Thank you for your support,
Lisa Boroditsky & Stacey Kape

IF TEXTING WHILE DRIVING IS ILLEGAL IN BC, WHY ARE SO MANY OF OUR PARENTS BREAKING THE LAW IN VTT'S DRIVE-THRU?
Distracted driving is the third leading cause of fatal car crashes in B.C., with an average of 94 deaths per year due to distractions such as using a personal electronic device behind the wheel. Even though it may feel "safe" to text and drive in the VTT drive-thru it is NOT and seriously compromises the safety of our school community. "Text 'n Drive" has been against the law since 2010.
Please obey the law and do NOT text and drive in the Safeway lot nor in the drive thru. We owe it to our children to model the right behaviour.
Two more pleas:
Nathan, Sydney, Angie and Lito are there to help you and to keep everyone safe. Please respectfully follow their directions. Their advice is intended for the greater good.
The parking spaces along the soccer pitch and the south side of the school are for faculty use only. Please do not park your car there. You risk getting ticketed or towed.

WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI BELLAS
Shabbat Parashat Yitro
We are "Doers"

"Tikkun Olam" is a term that we use extensively around our school, particularly in the upper grades. In fact, in Grades 6 & 7, our citizenship and leadership curriculum and courses are called Tikkun Olam 6 and 7. The term literally translates to "Repairing the World" and is a value that has its roots in the Torah and is a driving force behind how and why the Jewish people is expected to live life according to the mitzvot/commandments of our tradition. However, like many common phrases or vocabulary terms, because it is used so much, overused in fact according to some, it has lost the essence of its meaning. That essence has its roots in this week's Torah portion.
This Shabbat, we read the story of B'nei Yisrael coming to camp at the foot of Mount Sinai in preparation for the revelation and acceptance of Torah. Moshe ascends the mountain of God and the transmission of the Ten Commandments kicks off the many months of on-going revelation from God to Moshe to the people that will take place from this parasha through the beginning of the Book of Numbers. This week, when the Children of Israel are offered the Torah's teachings for the first time, it is their response which is the root of our value of tikkun olam/repairing the world. In one voice, the entire nation miraculously states: "Na'aseh v'nishma!"/"We will do and we will understand!"

SCHOOL NEWS
Yishar Ko'ach to this Kindergarten student who, in lieu of gifts for his 6th birthday, solicited donations for the World Wildlife Fund. Zev loves wolves and directed his $320 donation to wolf conservation in Canada. Grade 4 students give a thumbs up to their Tu Bish'vat Seder, facilitated by Morah Ruth David. Despite 30+ teaching preschool, Loris Cohen still enthusiastically embraces many class traditions. As the birthday girl, she was the guest of honour at last week's Shabbat celebration. Yes, we're tight on space, but somehow the K teachers managed to squeeze in three classes and one visiting Grade 6 class for the annual Tu Bish'vat Seder, beautifully led by Morah Ellen and her guitar.
It's hard to believe Kindergarten students created these gorgeous animal portraits. Click here to see more. Ruthi Akselrod's Grade 3 students invited parents into the classroom to help celebrate a Tu Bish'vat Seder.
She's more than an illusion. Morah Smadar of the Lookstein Institute in Israel pays a visit to our Grade 4 classes to teach a live Torah lesson. Prior to this week, our students only knew her through the technology of Skype.
They're one tenacious group! Somehow, Kindergarten students manage to find all kinds of treasures hiding in the playground daily. In the photo above, a student shows off the plastic pony she discovered buried in the sand pit. |

Do You Park at Safeway?
REMEMBER: This lot does
NOT belong to VTT. Safeway allows our families to quickly park there in the morning for a
QUICK drop-off. Please immediately return to your cars and leave the lot to allow other families (who arrive later) and patrons to park.
Please avoid chatting in the lot and consider those wishing to park. We need everyone's cooperation to make the difficult parking situation a little more manageable.
