HEAD OF SCHOOL'S MESSAGE

Dear VTT Community,

It has been wonderful welcoming all our students and families back to Vancouver Talmud Torah for Term II. Because of the somewhat later start to school and the earlier Passover break this year, this term will fly by. There is much ground to cover, however. Some events to look forward to include: Games Night on January 23rd, Tu Bish'vat Seders and activities, the Grade 2 Tefilah Breakfast, our annual Purim Carnival, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and Beauty and the Beast, this year's spring musical.

jsh I would also like to inform our community that Janice St. Helene, our Principal of Intermediate Grades & Director of Education, will be resigning from her position effective June 30, 2013. Janice began her career at VTT as an intermediate faculty member in 1998 and has been an integral member of the leadership team for the past six years. Ms. St. Helene has played a key role in supporting many students and teachers during her tenure and in ensuring professional excellence in curriculum delivery. Over the next few months, we will be recruiting a new Principal and will communicate with you at a later date regarding this placement.

Janice's contributions to our school have been invaluable and incalculable. We extend warm wishes to her as she embarks on her next chapter of learning and discovery.

Shabbat Shalom,

Cathy Lowenstein, M.Ed.

WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI BELLAS

Shabbat Parashat Va'eira/Shabbat Rosh Hodesh Sh'vat

Let's Take Our Lead from the PPP

rabbi bellas

This week, I am honored to share the space for my weekly D'var Torah column with the PPP who has an important message to communicate with all of you in advance of Tu Bish'vat. Leadership is about role modeling and the leadership gift that the PPP is making to purchase trees in Israel this year is an example for us to follow and I hope you will all join me in following them! Please take a moment to read the letter from PPP Co-Chairs, Marnie Greenwald and Joanna Wasel below.

Shabbat Shalom and Hodesh Tov!

Dear VTT Parents,

Part of the mission of Vancouver Talmud Torah's Parent Participation Program is to provide our families and community with ways to be able to bring the celebration of the Jewish festivals that are at the heart of our school and our people home to you. Today, we write this letter to all of our families to accompany the Jewish National Fund (JNF) Tu Bish'vat package that has been sent home. Tu Bish'vat - The New Year of the Trees - draws our attention both to the environmental mitzvot of the Jewish tradition and to the on-going miraculous achievements of the JNF in greening the Land of Israel, transforming it from desert wasteland into fertile forests and farmland. Each year, the PPP sets aside part of its budget for Tu Bish'vat and we would like to share our allocation decision with all of you and encourage you to join us! Read more online...

100% OF VTT FAMILIES = SUCCESS

On December 13th, over 50 volunteers for the VTT Campus Campaign began reaching out to all current VTT families regarding support for the expanded and revitalized Talmud Torah. The goal is to have 100% of all VTT families make a gift to the campaign - and every single gift matters.

In just over two weeks, we have achieved a 23% participation rate! It's an incredible result in such a short time. Both Campaign and VTT leadership are immensely grateful to those who have committed to-date - the gifts are so generous and inspiring - as well as the 50 canvassers who are giving so much of their time for this important cause.

This is a once-in-a-generation project and we hope that everyone will be a part of it.

We had aimed to have all families contacted before the winter break, but didn't quite get there. The calls are continuing now and we plan to reach every single family. Thank you for your patience! If you would like more information about how to give, how to stretch your commitment over a period of up to five years, or different ways to give, please contact Andrea Wilkinson.

As more families commit, and our participation numbers increase, the logo below will be coloured in. Let's not leave any grey! Thank you for your support. It is deeply appreciated.

jewish directory
Cover from 2010-12 Edition
For decades, the Jewish Community Telephone Directory has been the go-to resource in our community. It has also been an incredibly important VTT fundraiser, adding significant resources to the school's annual campaign for priority needs, equipment purchases and other upgrades around the school. VTT is grateful for the vision and support of the Directory's editor for the last 30 years, Carole Fader.

This year, under the leadership of Belinda Gutman and Megan Laskin, the Directory is undergoing a major update. 30 PPP volunteers have been calling every name in the Directory to ensure that the contact information is correct. The team is also encouraging the VTT community and members of the community at-large to add their names, if they are not in it already. The more names we have, the better able we are to sell advertising, which is where most of the revenue comes from.

We are encouraging everyone to ensure that they are "in" - both listed and if you have a business, small or large, to advertise. Not only will your business benefit for the next two years, but you will be supporting VTT! For more information, click here.

WIN-WIN! HELP THE GRADE 7 CLASS WHILE BENEFITING YOUR BUSINESS
games night
Each year, VTT's Grade 7 students embark on the Strathcona trip - a week long excursion to Vancouver Island where they learn outdoor skills, build their confidence and further deepen the bonds with their classmates before embarking on the next chapter of their lives. For many, it represents the highlight of their time at VTT.

In order to cover the costs of the program, each family is required to contribute money and then fundraise the rest. This year's goal is $18,000.

Community Games Night, a fun-filled community event each January, is the marquee Strathcona fundraiser. Funds are raised through sponsorship, games, and other activities. In recent years, we have been fortunate to have so many VTT families and community partners support this important event.

This year, we are pleased to acknowledge the presenting sponsor of Games Night and Strathcona 2013, e-Renter.com. More opportunities to promote your business and support this event are available. For more information, please click here.

TU BISH'VAT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

tu bshvat seder
During the week of January 21st, each class will have the opportunity to participate in a traditional Tu Bish'vat Seder by enjoying an array of dried fruits. The PPP is looking for a few volunteers to help prepare for the Seders on January 22nd and January 25th. If you are available to help, please follow this link

Thank you to Ruthanne Adler for donating $300 to the VTT Campus Campaign. As you may recall, Ruthanne sold handmade t-shirts at the JCC Hanukkah Marketplace in December with a goal to donate net proceeds to our building campaign. She more than followed through on her promise and we thank her very much!

guess who
Our Games Room is in desperate need of additional games for a very popular lunch time activity. Games should be quick and easy to set up and should not take too long to play. Guess Who, UNO, Lego, and arts & crafts are always popular. Drop off your donations to Jennifer's office. Thank you!

JNF

As a child, do you remember planting trees in Israel for Tu Bish'vat? JNF forms will be sent home with the youngest child of every family. Please consider making a donation to plant a tree in Israel. Help continue a diaspora tradition!
