WEEKLY TORAH PORTION WITH RABBI BELLAS

Shabbat Hanukkah II/Parashat Mikeitz

Follow Your Dreams

rabbi bellas

This Shabbat, as we light the candles of the 7th night of Hanukkah, complete our second to last week of school during which we celebrated the festival with our presentation of "Macca-Beat-It", and look forward to the coming of the winter vacation and the secular New Year of 2012, our weekly parasha returns us to the theme of dreams, which has been significant not only in the life of Joseph, the main character of this on-going narrative, but of his father Jacob as well. Jacob dreamt of a ladder, on which angels were ascending and descending from heaven, making him a witness to God's presence and work in the world. Joseph's dreaming and dream reading abilities were a gift, which not only made him a seer of the future, but also allowed him to fulfill his destiny through his work with Pharaoh. While very few of us have the sooth-saying and interpretation abilities of Joseph, the way that he allowed his dreams to serve as the "vision," motivation, and guide for his life serves as a positive model for us all.

When it comes to making choices and decisions, be they major or minor in nature, having goals and dreams to follow is very important. Some of us feel a sense of "calling" or elect to "follow our gut" at decision-making time, while others of us have a more cerebral approach. However, no matter what voices one listens to, our choices must have a direction in mind. This is the point at which goals and dreams come into play. Read more online...

loris
We've done the math and that number is indeed accurate.
Loris Cohen, a veteran Talmud Torah preschool teacher for the last 35 years, has warmly greeted and hugged her students a total of 1,330,000 times since 1977. Despite her many years patiently awaiting her students' daily arrival, she still treats each and every child as though he or she is the center of her universe. EVERYONE is a special neshamah (Jewish soul) in Loris's eyes.

digivations

DIGIVATIONS, an after school program at VTT, offers a unique Judaics and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) integrated curriculum.  To celebrate Hanukkah, students modeled the physics principles of Newton's Laws and concepts of torque, rotational motion, momentum, and centripetal force when they spun one of the largest free-spinning dreidels in the world
(http://youtu.be/Rjz3SYVwPos).
Dreidel created by White Rock/South Surrey JCC's Dean Donnelly.
