Dear Friends,

At Vancouver Talmud Torah, we are committed to educational excellence, our unique sense of family and meeting the needs of our diverse community of learners.  VTT is consistently ranked among the top elementary schools in the province, despite not screening on the basis of academic or financial ability.

Your contributions have helped us achieve this success -- for which we are deeply grateful. VTT is pleased to acknowledge the many donations made to date this year.  To recognize these gifts, we have published Todah, which we invite you to read by clicking here.

Acknowledging and reporting back to our donors is very important to us. In response to feedback from many supporters, we will begin listing acknowledgements monthly through our e-newsletter Hadashot. If you do not already receive Hadashot, click here to be added to the mailing list.

Again, thank you for you generous support. You may read Todah by clicking here.

What Does Being Jewish Mean to Me?

rabbi bellas

A few days ago, I was asked to think about the question, "What does being Jewish mean to you?" It was noted that as a Rabbi, it was a very interesting thing about which to think. Indeed, it was... After taking a moment to reflect on all the ideas that were coming to mind, I came up with one word: PEOPLEHOOD. I noted that Judaism is more than a religion of beliefs, more than a culture, more than a nation, more than a system of observances and ritual practices. It is all of these things and even more which, when put together, create a PEOPLE. My Jewishness means being connected to other Jews all around the world with whom I share a history, set of values, language, and cycle of religious life. We may not agree about all things related to being Jewish, but those are so outnumbered by what unites us as a people. In reflecting on some of the behaviors of our matriarchs and patriarchs in this week's parasha/Torah portion and those from recent weeks, I am struck by how the theme of peoplehood was so central to their lives, even though they were just planting the seeds of the people that would grow from their descendants.

Shabbat Shalom,

HOT LUNCH PROGRAM GETS MAJOR BOOST

rozen

VTT gratefully acknowledges Jack and Doreen Rozen, whose generous gift from the Marc Rozen Memorial Fund will provide hot lunches for several VTT families this year.

Over the summer, the need for hot lunch subsidies grew significantly and this gift, which will fund the subsidy program for the entire year, will enable VTT to meet the increased demand.

VTT is privileged to be able to honour Marc's memory through this gift. Marc was truly dedicated to community and worked tirelessly to support disadvantaged children and youth throughout the region.  May this gift inspire others to support not only the hot lunch subsidy program, but the many other needs at Talmud Torah each year.

SHONOT | ODDS 'N ENDZ

geoWe want to thank our very generous donors, Jim and Doreen Rainer, for a wonderful set of National Geographic magazines that they have parted with after years of collection.  There are editions (over 500 of them!) from as long ago as 1921 and they are in mint condition!  These National Geographics are a real highlight in Morah Ronneat's grade 6 and 7 Humanities classes.  Jim and Doreen Rainer heard about our school through one of our students who connected with them because of their mutual love of nature.  Thank you so much to the Rainers!
