What two words carry enough power to not only lower women's self-esteem but make them especially vulnerable to perpetrations of every kind? What two words are the last words many women have heard just before being raped or murdered?
Slut and Whore.
These two words have been used for millennia to shame women from all walks of life. They have often been used to justify all manner of ill treatment, including rape and murder. Maybe you have personal experience with these two words?

 Shameless Women? Yes - and Brave Too!
I was privileged to present for Jessica Hadari's FEM Talks in Oakland, CA last month. The topic was Cultivating Sacred Sex and my co-presenters from left to right in the photo above were Shara Ogin, Jennifer Rode and Vigie Tovar. Jessica Hadari (far right) presents monthly salons to empower women in all facets of their personal and professional lives. Hi Veronica, I was just reading your newsletter about the Suzy Hamilton story. When I first saw the headline in the paper a few weeks ago about a famous athlete being outed as a former escort, I thought, "Jesus, here we go again. Here's the latest high profile person who's going to suffer public humiliation for making a personal choice that doesn't fit into American culture's suffocatingly narrow version of normal. Now the only thing to watch for is whether she's going to apologize for it." Yup, shame wins out again. We watch this again and again practically on a weekly basis. Occasionally, someone refuses to apologize and I can practically feel the focus and inner strength that person has to exert in order not to wither in the face of the collective judgment. It's always very inspiring to me when I can witness that. So, thanks for keeping the discussion going on shame and its many faces, because if we don't talk about it, it just increases its ability to control our behavior without us even knowing it.
