For all of us, but especially for women, sex can represent both pleasure and pain, positive and negative experiences, powerlessness and personal power.
Sometimes this confusing cocktail of experiences and emotions can evoke a sense of embarrassment and even shame. We might find ourselves laughing at sexual humor when inside we are feeling a sense of revulsion. Or perhaps in our eagerness to experiment, we have encountered more frustration than satisfaction. And for many of us, our desire to please our partner can take us places which don't feel completely aligned with our preferences and desires.
How can we find our own truth when it comes to sex? And how can sex bring us more joy and enjoyment? If we choose to abstain from sexual interaction, can we still feel fully alive and engaged in the human journey? And if orgasms are eluding us, is it possible to find our way to fulfillment regardless of our partner's willingness or ability?

Hi Veronica, I was just reading your newsletter about the Suzy Hamilton story. When I first saw the headline in the paper a few weeks ago about a famous athlete being outed as a former escort, I thought, "Jesus, here we go again. Here's the latest high profile person who's going to suffer public humiliation for making a personal choice that doesn't fit into American culture's suffocatingly narrow version of normal. Now the only thing to watch for is whether she's going to apologize for it." Yup, shame wins out again. We watch this again and again practically on a weekly basis. Occasionally, someone refuses to apologize and I can practically feel the focus and inner strength that person has to exert in order not to wither in the face of the collective judgment. It's always very inspiring to me when I can witness that. So, thanks for keeping the discussion going on shame and its many faces, because if we don't talk about it, it just increases its ability to control our behavior without us even knowing it.
