Project to pump up patient safety across UCHealth        
After a year of preparation, UCH and its UCHealth partners are gearing up to launch a system-wide initiative to integrate Alaris programmable infusion pumps with the Epic electronic health record. UCH will be the first to go live with the technology, which promises to significantly reduce the number of medication errors and risk to patients. DBS for OCD at UCH 
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is well-established as a treatment for Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. But this July, the hospital used DBS for the first time to treat a patient with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). >>More

Transitions-of-care pilot looks to speed patients home       
A pharmacy-centered effort to reduce 30-day readmission rates at UCH did its job. Now efforts are underway to make the process more efficient by calling on multiple providers to shoulder the responsibility for discharging patients with the resources they need. UCH erects new barriers in battle against C-diff   
To guard against the spread of C-diff, a damaging and potentially deadly intestinal infection, the hospital has instituted tighter contact precautions, piloted a new disinfectant, and implemented more stringent review of antibiotic use. Rates are down, but "There is no acceptable level for C-diff," says Michelle Barron, MD, medical director for infection prevention and control.

Blood Bank, OB aim to cap wrong blood in tube errors     

The pilot in the Women's Care and Birthing centers uses special, shorter pink-topped tubes (left) sent by the Blood Bank to collect second specimens for typing. The aim: ensure safety if emergency transfusions are needed.
