I'm continuing with traveler sketches of women who travel with us. Last month we had an active retired grandmother and this month a savvy working professional. She hails from Vancouver, Canada and is a hard working, totally dedicated professional in the healthcare industry. Independent with great taste, this gal knows how to live. She recently downsized to a smaller classy condo and savours her walks by the water each day to work. She is exceptionally well traveled, single, active, and a gem to travel with. Her first trip with Serendipity Traveler was Autumn in New England. She fell in love with the East coast and liked the contrasts. Most appreciative of our style of travel, last year she joined our English Garden Tour and, as always, was a wonderful addition to the mix of women travelers. She is ready to return to Turkey with us or perhaps another trip to France. I love to get her call asking if there is room for her on a trip. Rarely can she plan far ahead and I will always jump through hoops to try and accommodate her timing. I relish traveling with this woman who is truly appreciative of my efforts to make each trip one of a kind.

As I get ready to leave for our Ireland trip, I thought I would share a few packing tips. Your carry on can't weight more than 40 lbs on international flights. It is not easy to travel to a country where the weather plays tricks on you and Ireland fits that description of needing a variety of clothes. One has to pack even more wisely than usual to fit everything in a carry on. I do not check luggage on an outbound flight. Coming home, who cares. Going, I want my luggage in the overhead bin. I like trouser pants instead of jeans as they work for night and daytime and are lighter weight. Silk long underwear is a help if you chill easily and is light to pack instead of bulky sweaters. Scarfs are great for a quick change of pace and for warmth when the winds are blowing. Linen is supposed to look wrinkled which makes it perfect for traveling. I was thrilled to find linen pants on sale at LL Bean for this trip. J. Jill also has lots of linen too. Wear your best walking shoes and that will give you room for two more pairs and fill the shoes with lotions and potions in Ziploc bags. Depending again on climate, you can plan to rinse out....not in Ireland, yes in the Caribbean! We begin in Dublin so laundry services will be available and I think hotel laundry services enable a super way to pack light.

Charleston Makes The List

The World Travel Awards are in and 4.8 million readers voted Istanbul #1 for European cities, ahead of Paris, London and Vienna. Turkey welcomed 31 million visitors in 2012 and the number continues to rise in 2013. As I mentioned last month, now is the time to visit Turkey before the numbers swell even further. The European favorites, in order of preference are Istanbul, Florence, Rome, Barcelona, Paris, Venice, Prague, Bruges, Vienna and London. How many have you explored? In 2014, we will be traveling to Istanbul, Rome, Venice and London and hope you are with us. For the world's favorite cities there are some surprises. Bangkok takes the first spot with Istanbul #2 followed by Florence, Cape Town, Kyoto, Rome, Charleston, South Carolina, Barcelona, Paris, and Chiang Mai, in Thailand. Our Charleston trip is timed when the Charleston Garden Club offers their annual Historic House and Garden Tour. Join us when the gardens are blooming and notable historic homes of Charleston are open for us to discover.

Blushing with Thankfulness
A traveler considering our Dominica trip asked for a reference from someone who had been on that particular trip. Here is the email response to her request from Leslie who was on our very first trip to Dominica. If you want a winter break our annual trip to Dominica is ideal.
Hi Deb,
My trip with Peggy to Dominica was wonderful. I can't say enough about it. The place is beautiful, peaceful, and tranquil.
I enjoy hiking, and I was able to do that every day. If that is not your cup if tea, no worries, there is lots to do (or not), and Peggy will be more than happy to help you plan how you would like to spend your time. The yoga was in a lovely spot, and was really great. You can also get a massage every day. A real treat. The food was delicious, and very fresh. Always a lovely meal. The accommodations were magical. I was high up in the jungle in a clean, wonderful room, surrounded by nature. I even had an outdoor shower. It was the best. The staff at Jungle Bay are helpful and friendly, and will always do their best.
As for Peggy, she is a fabulous woman who is able to combine her love of travel and business savvy with her kind and compassionate nature. You are in good hands with her and will have a terrific time if you choose to go to Dominica.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to chat some more, or if you have any questions.
Best,
Leslie
