Virtual panel discussion
Internationally, control and instrumentation (C&I) is recognised as an engineering discipline. In South Africa it is not. The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) does not have a registration category for C&I, although some discussion has recently been initiated. In our panel discussion we asked industry players to comment on these issues; including the question of what benefits ECSA registration offers. The comments made by the participants are their views and are not necessarily the views of their companies or organisations.
Petrus Klopper, SAIMC Tshwane Branch/Ai2SA; Dr. Otis Tichatonga Nyandoro, SACAC president/Wits; Jurie Weidemann, Allpronix / SAIMC Tshwane and Dave Wibberley, Adroit Technologies.
The questions answered by the virtual panel are:
- Is it important for C&I to be recognised as an engineering discipline
- Does ECSA registration offer engineers and technologists any benefits?
- Should SAIMC or any other professional institute do more to achieve recognition of C&I as an engineering discipline?
- As in other disciplines, such as accounting, should registration as a C&I engineer or technologist require an examination? If so, should it be administered by ECSA or SAIMC or any other institution?
- Are academic and universities of technology providing enough opportunities to qualify students as a C&I engineer or technologist? Should it be offered as an undergrad or post-graduate qualification?
- There is talk about changing the technologist and BTech requirements at universities of technology. Do you believe that the current system meets the requirements of industry or is there room for change? If so, what are your expectations?... (more)
