DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS NOTICE 736 OF 2015
The Department of the Environment Affairs (DEA) published the above notice on 24 July 2015. A copy can be obtained from IESSA website Technology page, at www.iessa.org.za.
The notice calls for Waste Management Plans (WMP) for, among others, "electrical and electronic equipment" and "lighting equipment".
"Electrical and electronic equipment" is defined as equipment which is dependent on electric currents or electromagnetic fields in order to work properly and equipment for the generation, transfer and measurements of such currents and fields. "Lighting equipment" means electrical or electronic equipment used for producing artificial light or illumination and "producer" means any person or institution engaged in the commercial manufacture, conversion, refurbishment or import of new and/or used: paper and packaging materials; lighting equipment; or electrical and electronic equipment; and which are intended for distribution in the Republic of South Africa.
Letters requesting 1) extension of deadline (granted) and 2) clarification of number of facts, were sent.
Meetings with DEA were attended expressing IESSA concerns to no avail.
On 22nd March 2016, IESSA sent another letter to the DEA requesting clarification so that IESSA can update members on developing the Waste Management Programme. The programme must be approved by 70% of the registered producers registered with the DEA.
IESSA will continue to report on the progress of a WMP. IESSA invites any members wishing to participate in the project to inform Sue Swash by email at sue@iessa.org.za. Please state what your interests and concerns are.
This will be discussed at the IESSA Conference between 15 and 18 May 2016
