Eskom domesic single phase tariffs: prepayment vs. credit metering

Domestic electricity users often ask for details of Eskom's electricity pricing and the options of prepayment vs. credit metering. The summary below prepared by EE Publishers provides the details in a digestible form.

1. Credit metering
 
1.1 Homepower 4, with 80 A 1-ph credit meter:
(typically supplying higher-consumption households with many electrical appliances)
Tariff rates: 0 - 600 kWh: 113,89c/kWh; >600 kWh: 183,13c/kWh; Fixed charge independent of kWh usage: R90/month
 
1.2 Homelight 60A, with 80 A 1-ph credit meter (electrification only):
(typically supplying suburban higher-usage households in urban areas with a number of electrical appliances, including a geyser)
Tariff rates: 0 - 600 kWh: 107,74c/kWh; >600 kWh: 183,13c/kWh; Fixed charge independent of kWh usage: NIL
  
  
2. Prepayment metering
 
2.1 Homelight 20A, with 20 A 1-phase prepayment meter:
(typically supplying low-consumption rural and small urban households who only use power for a few electrical appliances)
Tariff rates: 0 - 600 kWh: 97,22c/kWh; >600 kWh: 108,25c/kWh; Fixed charge independent of kWh usage: NIL
 
2.2 Homelight 60A, with 60 A 1-ph prepayment meter:
(typically supplying suburban higher-usage households in urban areas with a number of electrical appliances, including a geyser)
Tariff rates: 0 - 600 kWh: 107,74c/kWh; >600 kWh: 183,13c/kWh; Fixed charge independent of kWh usage: NIL

Note 1: When opening an Eskom account for an electricity supply, credit meter customers are required to make an upfront deposit equal to their estimated usage for three months, to protect Eskom in case of payment default.
  
Note 2: The above approved tariff rates are likely to increase shortly as Eskom has applied to NERSA for a further increase for the remainder of its 2015/16 financial year ending 31 March 2016, as well as for the remainder of the multi-year price determination period ending 31 March 2018...
