Prof. Dorota Grejner-Brzezinska, president of the Institute of Navigation, and Dr. Carl Reed, former Chief Technology Officer at the Open Geospatial Consortium, will be keynote speakers at Geomatics Indaba 2015, South Africa's foremost surveying, geospatial and mapping conference.
Dorota Grejner-Brzezinska is a professor and chair, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering, and Director of the Satellite Positioning and Inertial Navigation (SPIN) Laboratory at The Ohio State University. Her research interests cover GPS/GNSS algorithms, GPS/inertial and other sensor integration for navigation in GPS-challenged environments, sensors and algorithms for indoor and personal navigation, mobile mapping. She has published over 300 peer-reviewed journal and proceedings papers, numerous technical reports and five book chapters on GPS and navigation, and led over 25 sponsored research projects with the total budget of $17-million.
Prof. Grejner-Brzezinska is a Fellow of the Institute of Navigation (ION), Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN), and the recipient of the 2005 ION Thomas Thurlow Award and the 2005 United States Geospatial Information Foundation (USGIF) Academic Research Award. She is president of the Institute of Navigation, and president of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) Commission 4, Positioning and applications, and IAG Fellow.
At Geomatics Indaba 2015, Prof. Grejner-Brzezinska will be speaking about future trends for positioning/navigation technology with respect to strategic infrastructure planning and development.
Carl Reed is currently consulting with a focus on supporting the IT community in the effective use of geospatial standards. He recently retired as chief technology officer and executive director of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). He was responsible for facilitating the OGC standards development process, chairing the OGC Architecture Board, and chairing the OGC Planning Committee. He participates in and collaborates with other standards organisations, including OASIS, NENA, W3C, ISO, and the IETF. As a result, he has contributed to numerous internet and web standards.
During his tenure at the OGC, Dr. Reed has written numerous book chapters and articles and presented dozens of keynotes at geospatial/GIS conferences. Prior to the OGC, he was the vice president of geospatial marketing at Intergraph and previous to that president of Genasys Americas. In the late 1970s, he designed and implemented the first interactive (and open source) vector based GIS, the Map Overlay and Statistical System (MOSS). Dr. Reed received his PhD in Geography, specialising in systems architectures for GIS technology, from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1980. In 1995 and in 2009, he was voted one of the ten most influential people in the GIS industry. For his contributions to the geospatial industry, in 2009 Dr. Reed was inducted into the URISA GIS Hall of Fame.
During his keynote address at Geomatics Indaba 2015, Dr. Reed will be talking on the latest trends in GIS and open geospatial standards, and their role in strategic infrastructure planning and development.
