The lighting industry of South Africa is represented by the
Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA)

South African experts on various topics in the lighting technology field serve on the
CIE international committees responsible for the development of
standards for the different aspects of illumination.

IESSA represents southern Africa internationally and thereby acts as the

National Committee of the CIE (Commition Internationale De L'Eclairage)

President's year-end message

 Robert Henderson

With the festive season approaching and the industries closing for a well-earned rest, I look over my shoulder and wonder where the year has gone. IESSA has been working hard to recruit new members and to complete a number of standards and guides for the industry, which will be published by SANS soon.

The Branch Committees and the PRO Committee have done well by holding many interesting meetings and these have been strongly supported by members and non-members, showing that there is a need to share information and that all are keen to learn. Let us note these speakers and share their presentations with other branches or at the Conference in 2015.

The Development Committees have been hard pressed to present courses, due to the financial stress under which the South African economy finds itself. We must continue this effort and investigate new ways to inform non-members of what is available, and we must update the methods and subjects.

Committees have presented courses but attendance has been disappointing. The committees now wonder whether this is due to the material they offer or the economic situation in South Africa. Many lighting companies have had staff changing positions and this has reduced the amount of time members can afford IESSA while finding their feet in their new positions. I wish them well and I am confident that the situation will improve. I thank our members for the time they give to IESSA.

The Membership Committees are trying to get new members and we must relay the benefits we have received from IESSA to them. In being members, let us not forget the good things we have received and learnt from IESSA.

The CIE Committee is getting ready for the meeting in Manchester, UK, in June 2015 and many of their committees are completing their tasks by the end of this year. These will be presented at the meeting. CIE is the technical foundation of IESSA and has kept South Africa "up there" with the leaders.

Lastly, the Finance Committee reports that it has been hard keeping IESSA sound. With the shortage of new members, no conference and disappointing attendance at courses, we are under strain. I thank you all for the dedication and hard work for IESSA.

On a personal note, I have retired from Eskom but will continue to be a technical advisor to them as required. I thank all members and non-members for the support they have given to me over my many years in lighting.

As president of IESSA and on behalf of Council, I take this opportunity to thank all members of the committees for their support for IESSA over the past year. We wish you and your families all a safe, healthy and enjoyable time over the festive season and a safe return to a healthy and prosperous 2015.

Robert Henderson, IESSA president

From the IESSA Cape Town Branch
Philip Hammond

The committee and members would like to extend our warmest greetings to you at this time of the year. For the Cape Town branch, the year to date has been filled with variety. The old adage, "variety is the spice of life", was a driver for our choice of events for the branch.
  • February: Each committee member and portfolio holder reported back on their activities and functions.
  • March: Greg Segal presented "100 significant papers" about lighting over the years.
  • May: Branch AGM and exhibits, a video presentation of work by Danny Popper, Heath Nash and Lume Collective, culminating in a beer tasting by Devil's Peak Brewery.
  • June: Frankfurt Light and Building 2014 review by Cornel Neethling, supported by Albert Steyn of Stellenbosch University.
  • July: "The good, the bad and the ugly" by Robert Henderson.
  • August: Richard Kelly, "The structure of light" by Chris Brown.
  • September: "Exploring the colour of white light" by Pierre van Helden. The IESSA Cape Town Golf Day on 30 September was arranged entirely by EE Publishers' Jeanette Jordaan. We sincerely appreciate the work done by EE Publishers and the wonderful work done by Jeanette.
  • October: The Illumination Showcase - thank you to the committee and in particular to Andrew and Daniel for their hard work to ensure that this event was a resounding success. Thank you too to the exhibitors without whom the event would have been a non-starter, and to all those who attended.
  • November: IESSA Cape Town year-end function.
As chairman, I am honoured and humbled to be able to work with such a dedicated and committed committee. Thank you to each of you. May you and your families enjoy a well-earned rest until next year. May you have a blessed Christmas and a prosperous 2015.

Philip Hammond, chairperson: IESSA Cape Town branch.

What can IESSA do for me?

Sooner or later, those who serve IESSA will hear the question, "what can IESSA do for

Andrea Barausse

me?" from potential members considering joining the society.

This question arises over a membership fee of a few hundred
rand - money most of us would spend taking our families out to dinner - once.

Well, staying with food, we could say that IESSA will provide you with snacks and cold drinks at at least ten informative and professional presentations a year.

Before I do answer the question of what IESSA can do for you, I should ask whether you know who IESSA is.

The people representing and working for IESSA are not
IESSA
- they are part of it, they make IESSA happen, they contribute their time for no compensation or honour or fame or greed or gain. They serve IESSA on a voluntary basis. So do you know who IESSA is now?

IESSA is the association for those with an interest in lighting because they work with light, they specify lighting, they study and work with issues related to light and lighting, they install, manufacture, import or sell lighting. IESSA, then, is you and I.

IESSA can provide you with the opportunity to meet with other like-minded people, to share and learn from each other and from those who selflessly and constantly bring new and old topics to the ongoing discussion in the form of presentations and knowledge sharing.

I know what IESSA can do for you, but I am more interested in what you can do for IEESA. The challenge is to those who don't participate because they are too busy or because they "know it all", who can't find the time to attend meetings and learn a more.

Have we become just a group of saleswoman and salesmen?

Yet, in the presence of our customers, we are willing to swear by our commitment to service and to professionalism, but we cannot find the time to spend two or three hours per month to participate, learn or contribute to the only professional association we have.

Most ironic is that most of the people I have had the pleasure of meeting while serving on some of IESSA's committees or portfolios are not the ones who actually need to belong to IEESA.

Some of those people have more experience, knowledge and practical sense as lighting practitioners than the rest of us together. These are the people who want to be part of IESSA because they are passionate about the profession and the subject; they are passionate about raising the standards in this industry. I have never heard any of those people ask what IESSA can do for them. They know what it can do and they give a "piece" of themselves to make it better.

In a world where anyone who can bring a back-pack home from China returns as a "lighting expert", we need to discern, we must learn, speak the same language, help ourselves and the end-user to discern between good product and not-so-good product. To do that, we must share knowledge, facts, methods, rules and standards.

That is what IESSA can do for you if you'd let it.

Andrea Barausse, chairperson: IESSA Durban branch

From the IESSA Johannesburg Branch

This has been a year of much activity for the Johannesburg Branch and, once again, my
Donna Cogill
thanks go to our branch committee. We presented our members with a total of seven technical meetings on subjects ranging from Industrial Development Corporation funding to boosting retailers' turnover with lighting; the pros and cons of refitting and retrofitting, and the dimming of LEDs, among other subjects.

We also hosted a very successful annual IESSA JohannesburgBranch Golf Day. My thanks go to our committee members, Mark Botha, Richard Longford, Kurt Isele, Ida Isele, Chantale Ziman, Sean Schoombie, Henk Rotman and William Blackbeard. Thank you also to Council for its support, and to Sue Swash. Also, a big thank you to all the sponsors and players who participated.

In August 2014, we launched the Lighting Industry Technical Committee (LITC) to address the ongoing influx of sub-standard and unsafe LEDs from abroad. The LITC also aims to make industry and end-users aware of the dangers of these products, and of the role of standards and their implementation. My thanks go to Valdi Pereira, Deon van Vuuren, Connie Jonker, Henk Rotman and Alex Cremer, whose work has made this possible.
And lastly, special thanks to our members, without whose support none of this would be possible. Enjoy a well-deserved break and may 2015 bring much prosperity!

Donna Cogill, chairperson: IESSA Johannesburg branch.
Lighting Industry Technical Committee (LITC)
Henk Rotman

The IESSA newsletter of August 2014 announced an initiative by the Johannesburg Branch to address the growing influx of sub-standard and unsafe LED products into the country.

Meetings were held during the past few months to address this topic. Sub-committees were formed to focus on education and regulation and meetings were held to look into these matters.

Approaches are shaping up gradually and another general meeting will be held in early 2015, where progress will be reported on and actions defined.

Professional lighting practitioner - IESSA members to be certified as "competent persons"

IESSA members have been requested to apply to be certified by the IESSA Development Committee as "competent lighting practitioners" in the various fields of speciality as ratified.

The society believes that full IESSA members who follow the society's guidance and the published lighting design guides should be deemed competent persons.

IESSA-registered designers should be versed in the understanding and interpretation of photometric data, the performance of luminaires and light sources and the application of the lighting codes and can be described as competent persons who can design lighting solutions.

Application forms are available on the IESSA website or from the IESSA Branch Development Committee chairpersons. Completed applications will be ratified by the Development Committee. Successful applicants will receive ratification ID cards and will be listed on the IESSA website.
