Call for nominations for persons to serve on:
The Committee for Spatial Infrastructure
  
In terms of Section 5(3) of the Spatial Data Infrastructure Act, the Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform, invites interested persons to nominate suitable candidates to serve as members of the Committee for Spatial Information.

The Committee consists of the following members appointed by the Minister:
  • Two persons in the full-time employ of the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform
  • One person in the full-time employment of each of Statistics South Africa, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional, and other national departments of state identified by the Minister
  • One person from each provincial government in the full-time employ of such government
  • Two persons in the full-time employ of local municipalities, one of whom shall be from a municipality which is mainly rural in character and the other from a municipality which is mainly urban in character
  • One person to represent the Council of Government Information Technology Officers
  • One person to represent a professional association of persons involved in Geographic Information Science
  • One person involved in the teaching or research of Geographic Information Science
  • At least one person to represent the interests of public entities
  • One person from each data custodian as identified by the Minister
Appointments will be for a period of three years from 2013 - 2015. Members will be required to strategically direct the development and implementation of the South African Spatial Data
Infrastructure (SASDI) and to address matters related to spatial information to ensure that the maximum benefit is derived from investments in spatial information.

INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED
  
South African Surveying + Geomatics Indaba 2013, are pleased to announce the line-up of confirmed international keynote speakers for the geospatial event of 2013, as follows:
  • Geoff Zeiss, former director of Autodesk, now principal consultant at Between the Poles, an international thought leadership consulting firm
  • Roger Haagmans, principal scientist at the European Space Agency
  • Prof. Michael Barry, holder of the John Holmlund Chair in Land Tenure and Cadastral Systems at the University of Calgary, Canada
  • Peter Large, vice president and executive committee member of Trimble
In addition, details of two high-level local keynote presenters will be announced shortly.

 
Geoff Zeiss will talk on the convergence of BIM, CAD, geospatial and 3D, and its role in national development planning.
  
Roger Haagmans will be speaking about the European Space Agency's Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite project. His presentation is entitled "GOCE: the Formula 1 Satellite for Geodesy and Surveying".

Prof. Michael Barry, who has extensive field experience will be focusing his talk on "Land Administration and GIS: Trends and Challenges for Land Professionals". 

Peter Large will be focusing on how geospatial practitioners and organisations need to adapt their traditional roles in order to counter technological advances that have made geographic information more accessible and user-friendly.

THEME
  
The theme of SASGI 2013 is: "Geospatial Solutions for National Development Planning".
SAGI and EE Publishers believe that the Surveying, Geomatics and Geographic Information Science sectors must, can and should make an important contribution to achieving the political, social and economic goals contained in the National Development Plan, including education, health, security, housing, rural development, agriculture, water, land reform, infrastructure development (telecomms, electricity, transport, roads, etc.), construction, mining, industry, and much more.

SASGI 2013 is supported and endorsed by PLATO (the South African Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors), GISSA (Geo-Information Society of South Africa) and IMSSA (Institute of Mine Surveyors of South Africa), and has been accredited for Continuing Professional Development by PLATO, and qualifies for one CPD point per day for attending the conference. Presenters at the conference will earn an additional CPD credit.

CALL FOR PAPERS

A formal call for papers has been issued, and those wishing to present a paper at SASGI 2013 are urged to submit their abstract(s) by 10 May 2012. Please note you do not have to submit your complete paper by 10 May, only a short Abstract / Synopsis of your proposed paper for consideration.

TRAINING WORKSHOPS

There will be a significant emphasis at SASGI 2013 on training, skills upgrading and continuing professional development, and a total of 32 - one-hour training workshops will be presented over two days in 4 training rooms, each equipped for 30 trainees. A formal call for training workshop presenters will be issued shortly, but in the meantime:

EXHIBITION SALES AND EXPANDED FLOOR PLAN

Exhibition sales are proceeding excellently with 60 - 3 x 3 m exhibition booths sold to date. On Friday 19 April the last exhibition booth on the initial exhibition floorplan was sold, and an
expanded exhibition floorplan with an additional 12 stands is now in place.
