Robbie Yates
OBITUARY
IESSA 298/03 MB: Robert S. Yates
1927 - 2013

Robert S. Yates was born on 11 June 1927 and served his apprenticeship in Pretoria in his father's electrical contracting business before moving into theatre lighting, which always brought out the art in his work.

He then joined the Johannesburg City Council in the early 1970s. His love for the "art in lighting" was shown in his Johannesburg Christmas street and park lighting displays.
He played a major role in introducing good amenity lighting to South Africa. His lighting work both in the Eloff street mall and in Hillbrow still remains today. He introduced semi cylindrical illumination levels and measurement in these applications because the lighting on a face and person's body is more important than the light on the ground.

He also specialised in motorway and road lighting , and on this subject he wrote a research paper for the Automobile Association. This report was presented to the City and Guilds Institute of London and he was awarded their Certificate of Merit, the City of Guilds Institute Award (CGIA).

This award allowed him to register at London's Institute of Engineering and Technology as an incorporated engineer (I Eng).  He was recognised and registered in South Africa as a professional technologist by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

He always encouraged his staff to further their studies and skills and, under the previous administration in this country, developed a street lighting course to provide training to "non-whites" in the maintenance of street lighting. It was a first in South Africa and the Johannesburg City Council supported the project.

Robbie's experience in illumination and in training could not be surpassed by any tertiary institution. He was the moderator of many of the university illumination engineering examinations, ensuring that the correct information was taught and that the standards based on the City Guilds London were upheld.

He and his team also introduced a correspondence course through the Institute of Lighting Engineers of South Africa, enabling people in outlying areas to study illumination. This course ran for 20 years.

Robbie was the South African representative in the Commission de E'clairage CIE Division 4 - Lighting and Signalling for Transport at conferences overseas from 1975 to 1999 and continued participating in these Div 4 technical committees as corresponding member until 2004.

He was a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Institute of Lighting Engineers of South Africa (ILESA); past president of both the ILESA and the South African National Committee on Illumination; honorary vice-president of SANCI; and a fellow of the Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA).

Robbie is survived by his wife, Alison; son, Graham; grandson, Francis and his sister, Winifred. The South African lighting fraternity will miss him and the valued guidance he gave us will be a living memory to him.
