Message from the president
As South Africans, we are blessed with an abundance of natural resources and

well-developed financial, legal and transportation sectors. The JSE is the 18th largest stock exchange in the world and we have a solid infrastructure supporting the distribution of these resources to the major centres throughout the country.
As is often the case with growth and expansion, energy constraints continue to cause trouble within the South African economy. The adversities within the Eskom power system have, however, led to opportunities and challenges for us within the lighting sector. The seeming lack of support for local manufacturers - due to an apparent feud between the NRCS and the SABS Mark Scheme, and Test House - is a point of extreme concern for the organisation. This is a matter which needs to be addressed urgently with and by the DTI. What this industry needs is a supportive and enabling environment in which to operate. This will encourage growth and job creation within the lighting sector.
Moving closer to home, we are pleased to welcome Connie Jonker to the IESSA office. Connie brings with him a wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding to the organisation which will be invaluable in identifying and addressing challenges within the industry.
As the year draws to a close I would like to personally thank all members, both individuals and corporations, for their continued support. A special mention to those members of our serving committees and the "office" - we appreciate your dedication and service to the organisation. As the frantic year draws to a close - and I imagine that many of you will not get to read this until the Christmas break - I would like to wish you all, wherever you are, a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Please travel safely and return refreshed and invigorated.
