And Don't Forget to Register for This Month's PEG!

NSA Virginia's PEG has been meeting since September, 2012. The PEG was recently named, the Bacon PEG because the focus of discussion has been about bringing home more money (and those attending seem to also have an affinity for bacon). Meetings are usually attended by 10 -12NSA Va members and affiliates.

The cost to participate is $5 (payable on when you register for the workshop) plus the cost of what you order from the menu on the day of the meeting.

Have questions about the PEG?, call Pam Rambo at 757-903-6511 or email her at [email protected].

Presidents Remarks:

Pam Rambo, Ed.D

NSA VA President 2012-13

NSA Virginia monthly meetings are an opportunity to learn from national speakers with the CSP designation and to connect with regional friends in the speaking industry. The synergy that we have as a group is remarkable given our wide range of areas of expertise. The opportunity to share with each other and hear from the best of the best creates a unique opportunity for growth and networking for our members.

Imagine what we experience at our monthly meetings on steroids. That was my take on last year's NSA national convention in Indianapolis. This year, the NSA 2013 40th anniversary convention venue is very convenient to us in Philadelphia. The 2013 conference will feature amazing TED-like talks in the NSA Learning Lounge, the opportunity for us to test drive new technology and learn about cutting-edge strategies.

There is a pre-convention seminar for aspiring speakers and the conference line-up will include bonus sunrise and late-day sessions, live coaching sessions and a variety of other experiential learning opportunities. Convention details and travel information is contained in the convention article in this newsletter. The NSA national convention will transform your speaking business in just four days.

New Member Spotlight

Jeannea Spence
Jeannea Spence

Take unlimited energy, a thirst for continued professional and personal learning and growth and a mid-life recreation in 2011 and you get:  Jeannea Spence. ake an extensive 20 year background of sales & marketing, agency work in client relations and authentic leadership, sprinkle in a dose of

Jeannea (pronounced "Gina")is one of our newest NSA/Virginia member and is "indiSpenceable" to her clients, friends and her community connections.  Jeannea  Spence hails from a small town in Mississippi.  After two stops at the University of Alabama for both her undergraduate and graduate work she found her passion and skills honed in the world of corporate sales.

It made sense that Jeannea landed here in Richmond as she's been traveling up and down the road to Richmond for 15 years to meet with friends.

A mid-life recreation after being in a new sales position for 48 hours convinced her that the time was right to launch: indiSPENCEable Coaching here in Richmond. Jeannea,  a certified leadership coach, works with clients to help them strategically balance their inner passion and commitments with their corporate goals.  And, as follow up is key, she holds her clients "lovingly accountable" so as to take them to through to their next step of achievement.

One of Jeannea's goal in her professional development is to improve her skills on the platform.  Thus enter NSA/Virginia member:  Suzie Galvez who introduced her to our wonderful NSA/Virginia group.  Jeannea joined without ever having been to a meeting - which will happen in April.

To create the community balance in her life, Jeannea mentors teens through the Richmond Hill/Armstrong Leadership Program.  She mentors three teens for the program. A perfect weekend with the group might include having them over for a cookout, a footie slumber party and an opportunity play with her two "fur babies":  Maggie Mae, the dogbassador of Unconditional Love and Sadie Grace - the cat. (Who obviously prefers a shorter name!)

Please welcome Jeannea Spence to our membership.

Judy Ivey

What if your business needed a professional that had the experience of a graphic designer, the talent of a professional writer, was certified in ISO 9002 documentation and OSHA compliance, and had the work experience to guide you successfully through a new web, marketing or technical project?  That beautiful blend of creative and technical partnership does exist. Let me introduce new NSA/Virginia member, Judy Ivey.

Judy is President and owner of Ivey Writing Services. For over 15 year, Ivey Writing Services has worked with healthcare organizations, colleges, manufacturers, government contractors and private businesses when they have needed marketing pieces, press releases, training materials and student workbooks.  The fast world of internet information has changed the need and speed in which we communicate with our clients and customers.  Judy's melding of technical know-how, creative communication techniques and graphic arts allow her to serve a variety of audiences.

Judy joined NSA/Virginia because she wanted to do more public speaking and knew that the exposure to the national talent that our organization attracts for monthly meetings and the strong community of NSA/Virginia speakers would be the right place to further her platform skills and expand her professional community.

It is no surprise that Judy is a published author.  Her book  is entitled, "A Stay at the Boxwood Inn" which is about this bed and breakfast near Ft. Eustis, Virginia.  When she's not writing she enjoys ballroom dancing (please ask her about her favorite style of dance) and visiting with her three grown children and six grandchildren.  She is also passionate about speaking on raising confident girls.

Please reach out and welcome our newest member from Yorktown, Judy Ivey.

"Nothing last forever, not even your problems. Stay positive."

Tools of the Trade

By Dave Miles, NSA VA Publicity Chair

This month I would like to highlight a couple of tools that speakers and trainers can use to more effectively deliver their message through an online format.

Would you like to have your ideas come across in email just as clearly as they would in person or through a WebEx or Skype session? Being speakers and trainers, one of our biggest assets is the ability to be tremendously effective in our verbal communications - but does that same level of effectiveness come through in our emails? VoiceThread (www.VoiceThread.com) may be a tool that you find useful in creating a much more engaging online conversation with colleagues, existing clients/students, or potential new clients. VoiceThread states that it captures and then delivers your full presence, combining your voice and your media into a highly effective communications package. It's better than plain text and attachments, and They claim that it results in a 3-fold increase in the memory retention of your ideas. The recipient can respond back to you in a video format, making it as convienent as an email thread, but possibly as effective as a face-to-face online forum (WebEx, GoToMeeting, Skype).   It is available online at their website and also for the iPhone or iPad via the App Store.

The last set of tools that are similar but may work better for your needs are from a company called TechSmith.  They produce a number of products that we may be familiar with, if not by name, then at least by their use. Have you ever listened to a narrated powerpoint of a presentation before online, chances are they used a product such as Camtasia. Camtasia (www.TechSmith.com/camtasia) is great for trainers who want to produce a video, possibly with powerpoint (or Prezi) content, and even place a quiz within the material to show your economic buyers that your training was effective.

A more simple tool from TechSmith is Jing (www.TechSmith.com/jing). Jing allows you for free to capture your screen and record anything from your mouse movements to an entire video for up to 5 minutes. This is good for sharing a quick thought or communicating a message about your website. Imagine that you have a new feature on your website and would like to communicate that to your followers/subscribers - you can go to that new section or feature and have you show them quickly through the process and have you describe the value of your new offering. This is a nice free service that can you can easily get up and running with a simple download from their site.

The last tool from TechSmith that I wanted to highlight for this month was Snagit (www.TechSmith.com/snagit). Snagit is similar to Jing, but it allows no limit on the length of video or presentation that you want to show. Plus it allows you to not just capture a screen but use markup tools (arrows, text, thought/speech bubbles) to highlight your picture, and to record a video online including system audio without any extra effort. The audio capture from your computer is similar to what you would do in a YouTube video to capture audio from your system. It is easy to share these via social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others.

Hopefully some of these online collaboration, training, and presentation tools will help you better communicate your ideas when interacting in an online environment - taking at least a part of your stage presence and oral communication skills and incorporating it online.

If you have any suggestions or tools that you have found useful for a 'Tools of the Trade' article, or if you have utilized any of the tools from the series and have found them useful, please send me an email at [email protected]

Thanks,

Dave

NSA National Convention Trip for NSA Virginia Members

The NSA National Convention is a career-changing experience for speakers and entrepreneurs. It is a chance to connect with the most successful speakers and business owners in the country and learn new ways to monetize your skills, reach your niche customer and evaluate your brand.

The great news for NSA Va. members is that the 2013 national convention is on the east coast this year. Join your NSA Va. colleagues in Philadelphia July 27-30. Registration for the convention has begun at www.nsaspeaker.org. Save money by registering early by May 31. Early registration is $727 for national members and $977 for state chapter members who are not national members. Staff members, spouses and partners can attend for $657. Children between the ages of 10 and 16 can attend the NSA Youth Leadership Program at the early bird rate of $525. Early bird lodging is only $159 per night at the Marriott for reservations made through June 26.

Getting to Philadelphia is inexpensive. Philadelphia is an easy drive but will involve parking fees. Amtrak has great fares from Newport News, Williamsburg and Richmond. For example, The 94 Northeast Regional from Newport News to Philadelphia (9:15 am from Newport News and 10:29 am from Richmond July 26 arriving in Philadelphia at 3:54 pm) and 95 Northeast Regional return from Philadelphia to Newport News round trip fare is $159 on July 31. For more information about Amtrak service to and from the convention, go to www.amtrak.com. US Airways is currently advertising a $292 roundtrip fare for convention week.

Some of the members of NSA Va members are already planning to take Amtrak. Join us on the Amtrak 94 Northeast Regional on July 26th from your neighborhood Amtrak station. Whether you go by car, train or plane...see you at NSA 2013!
