Zillow:  US Housing Recovery Accelerates
Zillow's second quarter Real Estate Market Report shows home values increased 2.4% from the first quarter of 2013 to the second quarter of 2013 to $161,100 (see Fig. 1 below). This quarter marks the largest annual gain since August 2006 and largest quarterly gain since the fourth quarter of 2005. On an annual basis, the Zillow Home Value Index rose 5.8% from June 2012 levels.

Monthly appreciation remains strong with national home values growing by 0.9% from May. Not only did the pace of home value appreciation quicken in the second quarter, but the recovery also fully took hold nationwide. Markets in some areas of the Northeast, Midwest and Southeastern U.S., such as Atlanta, Chicago and St. Louis, that had previously been slow to turn the corner began to appreciate, which helped boost the overall national market. All of the top 30 largest metro areas covered by Zillow experienced annual appreciation in home values as of the end of the second quarter, and all have hit their bottom.

TECO Continues Work with Major League Baseball and Forest Products Lab

TECO Bat Pic_2008

Midway through the 2008 Major League Baseball (MLB) season, MLB assembled a team of technical experts that included TECO and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory, both located in the Madison, WI, area.  The team was charged with a goal of reducing the likelihood that wooden bats used during games would break into multiple pieces, and that work continues into the current 2013 season that is now more than half completed.

In a Lab Note Press Release issued by the USDA Forest Products Laboratory, the project and its progress is explained.

PANEL AGE 50 Publication Now Available

Panel Age 50

A collaboration between the Georgia Research Institute, The Donnell Group, Panel World magazine, and Hatton-Brown Publishers has resulted in a one-time, one-of-a-kind special publication that highlights many of the amazing accomplishments of the past 50 years in the panel and engineered wood industries.  Rich Donnell, Editor-in-Chief of Panel World magazine, admits that PANEL AGE 50 was never meant "to be an encyclopedia" but rather a look back on the industry and its happenings, all from the perspective of a trade media entity that has covered the industry for the past five decades.

For more information about PANEL AGE 50 or to order copies, contact Rhonda Thomas at Hatton-Brown Publishers.

AWC Technical Committee Week Wrap-Up

AWC The American Wood Council (AWC) has a staff of engineers and code experts that, together with input and participation from its wood industry members like TECO, "ensures the continued regulatory acceptance of wood products in the marketplace."  AWC is the only organization that advocates for all segments of the wood products industry before building code-writing bodies in the United States, and is also the authoritative ANSI-accredited standards developer of wood construction standards and design tools referenced in the codes.  The documents overseen and maintained by the AWC include the National Design Specification® (NDS®) for Wood Construction, the Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM) for One- and Two-Family Dwellings, and the Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) Standard. These documents and others are referenced in the 2012 family of I-codes, which includes the International Building Code and International Residential Code.

As a corporate associate member of the AWC, TECO takes an active role in the continuing development and improvement of these design tools and standards.  TECO CEO and President Steve Winistorfer has been a member of the AWC Wood Design Standards Committee for several years, and last week attended the annual AWC WDSC meetings held in Ashburn, VA.

A portion of the discussion during the meetings dealt with the need to complete revisions to the NDS, WFCM, and SDPWS standard before December 1, 2014.  This is the cutoff date set by the International Code Council's policy on updates to referenced standards.  In order for revisions to the NDS, WFCM, and SDPWS standard to be eligible for consideration in the 2015 I-codes, they must be completed by December 1, 2014.  The AWC and its technical committees will be working on a number of issues so that changes can be included in the next round of code revisions.

Wood Solutions Fair Coming to a City Near You

Wood Solutions Fairs (WSF), hosted by WoodWorks in the United States and the Canadian Wood Council in Canada, are a series of free, one-day educational events on the use of wood in non-residential and multi-family buildings that are scheduled in major metro areas on both sides of the US/Canada border.  These fairs are designed specifically for architects, engineers, builders, building designers, code officials, student, professors, and anyone who is interested in learning more about the use of wood in construction and the new and innovative wood products available

in the marketplace.

WSF's include a full slate of educational sessions led by industry experts and also an exhibit hall where wood products companies provide information on the products and services they produce and market. TECO has been involved as an exhibitor and its staff as speakers at previous Wood Solutions Fairs, and will participate in one or more of those scheduled for the coming months.

There are five WSF's scheduled in the U.S.:

September 17, 2013   Minneapolis, MN Wood Solutions Fair

October 15, 2013       Portland, OR Wood Solutions Fair

November 14, 2013     Baltimore, MD Wood Solutions Fair

January 29, 2014       Charlotte, NC Wood Solutions Fair
February 26, 2014      Long Beach, CA Wood Solutions Fair

The Canadian Wood Council has scheduled three WSF's for the remainder of 2013:
