Greetings!
The first article in this edition of "Under The Roof" includes a link to a press release announcing my purchase of TECO. Certainly, this is a significant happening for me and the company and brings with it a multitude of thoughts and feelings -- gratitude, and faith in the future, among them.
About my faith in, and hopes for, the future, I have to say that I would not have completed this deal if I didn't have a really good feeling about TECO's future or my ability to continue to make this company grow and succeed. And I am grateful to have with me such a talented and dedicated staff, and clients who are as committed to making quality products as they are making money.
As the housing market continues its slow but steady recovery, I look forward to working with more of you to make our collective future the best it can be. I am...
Faithfully and gratefully yours,
Steve G. Winistorfer, PE CEO and President TECO |

Housing Data from US Government
Various agencies in the U.S. government are involved in monitoring and providing data related to the US housing and construction markets, including the US Census Bureau and the
US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Most reports that provide statistics on US housing starts have annualized starts hovering near the 1 million level, such as the most recent Joint Release of New Residential Construction in April 2013, by the Census Bureau and HUD.
The Census Bureau also provides annual summaries of construction, such as the Highlights of 2012 Annual Building Permits, where you can learn that Minnesota and Colorado had the largest percentage increase of building permits compared to 2011, and that Houston, Dallas, New York, and Washington DC, in that order in both 2011 and 2012, had the most activity of all major metro areas.

Results of surveys of offices that issue building permits are contained in the Highlights of 2012 Characteristics of New Housing, and include such tidbits as: of the 9,000 multi-family buildings completed in 2012, 8,000 had three or fewer floors; and of the 368,000 single-family homes sold last year, 30% used vinyl siding as the exterior wall material but just 3% used wood.

High Winds: US Tornado and Atlantic Hurricane Seasons Underway
The 2013 Atlantic basin hurricane season began officially on June 1 and runs through November 30. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an active Atlantic hurricane season, a prediction that is similar to that issued by Colorado State University last month and updated earlier this week.
NOAA Press Release: NOAA predicts active 2013 Atlantic hurricane season
Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones (names that all refer to extreme wind storms that occur in different regions around the world) are identified and tracked more than was ever possible decades ago. There are several organizations and centers around the world that monitor weather and these high-wind events and alert the public when necessary. These include:
United States NOAA National Hurricane Center
Canadian Hurricane Centre
World Meteorological Organization's Severe Weather Information Centre
U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center
Because tornadoes can and do occur throughout the year, there is no official start or end to the tornado season in the United States. However, the most favorable conditions occur between March and October, with the highest incidences of tornadoes in the US in the past 20 years recorded in May and June. The United States has by far the most tornadoes of any other country, with an average of over 1,000 occurring each year (Canada is a distant second with about 100).

TECO Passes IAS Audit with Flying Colors
On May 22-23, the International Accreditation Service (IAS) conducted its annual review of TECO's certification system and program, with the IAS Auditor determining that TECO is operating in full compliance with the IAS accreditations it holds. TECO passed the audit with flying colors, with not a single non-conformance found.
