Greetings!
We hear and see a lot in the news about people making what appear to be the wrong decisions or questionable choices. Most everyone can recite a story or two of athletes who don't live up to the image their fans have of them, politicians and clergy who preach one thing in public then do the opposite in private, or even a regular Joe (or Josephine) who believes that certain rules or laws don't apply to them. We see this locally, nationally and internationally, and not just from individuals but from companies and governments too.
Doing the right thing is not always easy. In fact, doing the right thing is sometimes downright hard. It can cause heartache, pain, anxiety. But it can also create incredible feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction, and make a real and positive difference in the world. I would like to say that I live up to this ideal, but the truth is that I sometimes don't. Yet those times when I fall short only serve as reminders that acting with integrity in all I do is the goal, in my personal but also my professional life.
My challenge to myself is to live every day with integrity and strive to do not what is easy, but what is right. Maybe you'll want to make it your own personal goal and challenge. After all, the best reason for doing the right thing today is ... tomorrow!
Be well, and do well!

TECO Continues Work on Broken Bats with MLB
The 2013 Major League Baseball season is underway, and TECO is pleased to announce that it is continuing its work to reduce the likelihood that wooden bats will break into multiple pieces when used in Major League Baseball games. Working in concert with the USDA Forest Products Laboratory, Major League Baseball, and the Major League Baseball Players' Association, scientists and managers at TECO inspect wooden bats produced by the 30-plus approved MLB bat suppliers, and assist them in training their production staff. During the just-completed spring training in Florida and Arizona, TECO inspected bats at team facilities to ensure bat suppliers are complying with the MLB Bat Regulations.
In an article published on MLB.com near the end of the 2012 major league season, Scott Drake (VP of Business Operations with TECO) and Dave Kretschmann (research scientist at USDA FPL) explain the work they do together, which has led to a 50% reduction in the occurrence of multiple-piece broken bats since the project began midway through the 2008 season. This work continues for the 2013 season, with emphasis on how wood grading and density impact bat performance and durability.

TECO Passes Audits for Certification Programs in US, Canada, Japan
Periodically TECO is visited by auditors who determine whether the certification and testing programs TECO operates are in compliance with the accreditations it holds. Those accreditations are necessary in the markets where TECO's clients market and sell their products, which include the major wood-consuming markets in the United States, Canada, and Japan.
In the past several months, TECO has been audited by the International Accreditation Service for US accreditation, the Standards Council of Canada for Canadian accreditation, and by auditors representing the Japanese Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries for Japanese accreditation for JAS accreditation.
