President's Message
As another year comes quickly to a close, we hope that you will consider Rogerson Communities as you make your plans for year-end giving. Without the commitment and generosity of our donors, Rogerson Communities could not continue to provide services in our adult day health programs and award winning affordable housing for our elders. We look forward to another year working together with you to fulfill our mission of providing elders and their families with critical services, and providing dignity, longevity, and vitality for all.
James F. Seagle, Jr. President, Rogerson Communities

Rogerson Communities Wins 2012 MetLife Foundation Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing
At the November 15th presentation at Farnsworth House, (L to R) Scott Batey of Bay State Financial, representing MetLife Foundation; Jamie Seagle, President, Rogerson Communities; Laurie Trilling, V.P., Operations, Rogerson Communities; Victoria Shire, Senior Director of Vulnerable Populations, Enterprise Community Partners.
Farnsworth House in Jamaica Plain, Rogerson Communities' very first independent elder housing development, has won the prestigious 2012 MetLife Foundation Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing. The building opened in 1982 and offers 75 rent-subsidized apartments.
The award, presented by Enterprise Community Partners, Inc. and MetLife Foundation at a celebration held in mid-November, honors Rogerson's outstanding leadership, innovation, effectiveness, quality operations, and services in the area of affordable senior housing. The award also recognizes Rogerson Communities for incorporating green components in their housing and promoting a culture of environmental conservation among residents.
Unique about the "Greening of Farnsworth House" is the level to which its residents have embraced the project. Management has made it as simple as possible for residents to go green by providing refillable bottles and unlimited cleaning products, free CFL lightbulbs, shopping bags and more.
Adequate housing and services for seniors is one of the rapidly advancing issues in community development. The MetLife Foundation award highlights Rogerson Communities' "stand-out efforts" in the field nationally. It is particularly notable that an older building is being recognized; Farnsworth House celebrated its thirtieth birthday this fall. "Through its creative model, Rogerson is helping seniors lead vibrant, thriving lives, while setting a high standard for others nationally to emulate," said Melinda Pollack, Vice President, Enterprise Community Partners, Inc.

Focus on Philanthropy - Michael W. Fish

Mike Fish, at the Farnsworth House Celebration event receives a plaque naming the E.A. Fish Community Room in honor of his father Edward. (L to R) Brit d'Arbeloff, in-coming Board Chair, Rogerson Communities; Mike Fish, President & CEO, Dellbrook Construction; Jamie Seagle, Jr., President, Rogerson Communities
What gives Mike Fish all that incredible energy? It's not coffee, tea or protein shakes; it's a genuine interest in everything around him. He's been a busy guy since childhood - some might say he's precocious - starting work for his father, Greater Boston construction guru Edward A. Fish, at age 12.
"My dad taught me early on that you have to work for what you have and you can't have it if you don't earn it. And, what you have, you need to share, as there are plenty of people who aren't as lucky as you are - who don't have the same opportunities. I'm really very sorry that my son William didn't get to know his grandfather, but that makes it even more important that I pass on his values to my son, as my dad did to me."
Michael W. Fish is President & CEO of Dellbrook Construction LLC. Established in 2005, and one of the Northeast's fastest growing construction companies, Dellbrook provides a full range of construction services in both the public and private sectors. Their experience spans a broad range of projects including healthcare, education, senior living, multifamily housing and historic restoration. Mike was recently named to the Boston Business Journal's list of "40 Under 40," having led Dellbrook through consecutive years of 25% growth during a challenging economic environment.
Approaching real estate development from more than just the construction perspective gives Mike real insight into what brings a project together. "Understanding new sources of funding offers Rogerson tremendous opportunity. For example, utilizing New Markets Tax Credits at the Mount Pleasant Home project, and partnering with Brigham and Women's Hospital really made that project possible. Maintaining flexibility and mobility in the changing economy will allow Rogerson Communities to continue to have a tremendous impact."
Mike learned about Rogerson Communities from his father, who built Farnsworth House in 1982 - the year Mike was born. Mike himself was on the team when Sophia Snow Place was under construction. For Mike, charitable giving necessitates some real knowledge of the organization. "You have to know the people. I have a long family history with Rogerson Communities, and I am a very strong believer in the mission. It always comes down to the mission - and to the people who are there to execute it. At Rogerson, every person is committed to the mission."
This November, Mike and his wife Liz are celebrating the dedication of the E.A. Fish Community Room at Farnsworth House, made possible by a significant family gift to Rogerson Communities. Affordable housing figures prominently in their philanthropic priorities. Other charities important to the Fish family include the McCourt Foundation, for which Dellbrook organizes an annual bike ride, and JB's Keys to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Mike and Liz reside in Boston's South End, where they are raising their six month old son William.

Hong Lok House Senior Center Fundraiser Shines

GBCGAC's Executive Director Ruth Moy at Roche Bobois
(Right) Eugenia Gibbons, Christina Brown, and Rosamond Lu.
Rogerson Communities Board member Mary J. Kakas teamed up with PR consultant Barbara Quiroga as co-chairs of a campaign to raise funds to furnish the new Hong Lok House. They gathered individuals who live or work in the neighborhood (the Ritz Tower is mere steps from Hong Lok House) for a kick-off cocktail party hosted by elegant furniture showroom Roche Bobois. Guests were encouraged to sign up for an online fundraising effort that is focused on outfitting the new senior center in the building.
Powered by Fundraise.com, this online effort is a new area for Rogerson Communities, which must balance fundraising efforts for its own programs and those of other non-profits such as the Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center, which is the sponsor of Hong Lok House. It is part of Rogerson's mission to ensure the success of programs such as Hong Lok House, and the organization has already raised more than 5 million dollars to construct the building itself.
