On A Personal Note

Welcome to the Words of Wisdom ezine. Last month I had the pleasure to speak to several groups including two of my favorites, The Florida Authors and Publishers Association (FAPA), and Florida Writers Association (FWA) Tampa Writers Group. This month I am preparing to speak yet again at an Author/Speaker symposium titled "Authors Blueprint for Success", Saturday, Sept 20th, in Clearwater, FL. (Click the link for more details.) Not only will public speaking secrets be one of the topics, but the headliner, himself a New York Times Bestselling Author, will tell us how to garner major media attention! I am having so much fun educating others on publishing and design. If you have a love that is bubbling over, why not consider public speaking as an avenue for bringing your message to others? If you have a fear of speaking in public you definitely should join us for the symposium.

We have had another addition to the DocUmeant Publishing team in the area of developmental/ghostwriter. Join me in welcoming Linda Lee to our team of talented editors. You will find her easy to work with and very capable.

I hope you enjoy this newsletter and trust that you will find it informative and useful. I continue to offer this Words of Wisdom ezine because I want to help you and offer something that is of benefit to your company.

Wishing you a God-filled day!

Who Runs Your Business, Your Emotions or You?

The life of a business owner isn't all abundant and marvelous. We often have to deal with a diverse group of people, some of whom are kind and caring, while others are not so. It is in our dealings with those who are unkind and uncaring in our lives and businesses that our emotions can sometimes seem to take control of our thoughts and actions. Words said or written can't be taken back, not even with a heartfelt apology.

I recently read the story of US President Truman's rule on this subject. It is one that we all should adopt. He called it his "cooling-off period."  Any letters he wrote in anger had to remain unsent for 24 hours before they could be mailed. If the next day he still felt the same sentiments, he would send the letter. I can just imagine the pile of letters that never were sent. Or, perhaps he rewrote some and then mailed them once he had cooled off, and the anger in the words was toned down.

In today's world of instant communication it is easy to find yourself wishing you could recall your words. If you took even just a few minutes to consider what you've written in anger before you hit the send button in your email program, you could potentially avoid both regret and destroyed relationships.

As a real-life example, a client of mine (we'll call her Jan) received a harsh note from one of her constituents. They had different views of a specific way they should approach the celebration of Halloween. My client felt that it was fine to let her child go trick or treating while her constituent held the opposing view. In her email, the constituent lambasted my client. Quickly, Jan wrote her response. However, she had the foresight to ask me if she should send it or modify it some before she emailed it. With my assistance, we were able to get her point across clearly and without malice. This saved Jan's relationship with this constituent, and as a result, they agreed to disagree, but not discuss the matter any further.

When you are angry and breathing out venom, you only make yourself look bad to those around you. However difficult it may be, when you catch yourself speaking or writing words in anger, stop yourself midstream and consider the other person's perspective. When communication fails, it is often because we don't take the time to really listen to each other. Instead, we instinctively start formulating our response before the other person is even done speaking. Very often this happens almost automatically when someone corrects or criticizes us. We seek to transfer the blame, or else we completely disregard what is being said to us.

When you don't take responsibility for your own actions, you give away your personal power. With deeper wrongs and hurts, it's just easier to blame an external source or person rather than one's own actions. Here's what Dr. P.M. Forni said in his book, Choosing Civility: The Twenty-Five Rules of Considerate Conduct, "... shifting blame actually hinders relationships, focuses us on negativity and stunts our personal growth. Blame traps us in the past and robs us of our energy."

It is when you listen attentively that you're able to recognize the validity of what is being said. Not everything the other person is saying may be true, but there may be something communicated that you could grow from, if you only take the time to listen carefully.

The next time you find yourself in this situation try building up the other person, rather than tearing them down. Be kind with your words, and think before you speak or write. Practice President Truman's 24-hour "cooling off period" before you send out an angry reply. These courses of action will help your relationships with others in your business and personal life, and will also help to safeguard your reputation.
