We've all done it. We have the best in mind for ourselves. We know it's going to be "our year". We gear up. Gather up the will power and we are off at mach 1 speed for the New Year. A week or month later, we look around and disappointment sets in. That resolution that we were so determined to see through has slipped away into dust. Then anger, depression and self-hate creep in.

Why do resolutions fail? Some say the resolution is the action phase of an intention. Let's look at the root of the word resolution.

Resolution comes from the Latin word "resolvere" and literally means to loosen or release. From there it has come to mean

  1. To reach a firm decision
  2. To deal with successfully
  3. The trait of being resolute, firmness of purpose
  4. To find the solution to
  5. Reach a conclusion
  6. To make clearly visible
  7. (Personally, I like this one): to progress from dissonance to consonance

Marketing is a vital part of any business. Whether you own a start-up or a seasoned business without marketing your chance of success is virtually non-existent. One fun and effective way that I have discovered to market my design business is through postcard mailings.

So what if you're not a designer? Well, you can do one of two things; do it anyway with a program or hire someone like me to help. Really though, some of the best results have been from simple design so chances are your lack of skill will work to your advantage - heck, why not try taking a snapshot of your home page and using that? Didn't you put a lot of effort in designing the layout and getting the content just right? That's what that PrtScrn button is all about? You haven't yet discovered the value of that keyboard button? Give it a try, you might find it a more useful tool than you ever imagined.

What is it that makes postcard marketing so much fun and cost efficient at the same time? What I find is that designing my postcard is fun and with a single change it can be easily tested for results with a small market segment before doing a full run. This is where the all important tracking system comes into play. Whenever you engage a marketing campaign be sure to create a simple spreadsheet to track the results. This will aid you in evaluating how cost effective your campaign is so you will know if you should change it slightly or even implement a different approach altogether.

Are Your Ads Getting Seen? - by Janet Attard

Are you getting the response you hoped for from your advertising? If not, one factor affecting results could be where the ad is located on the page. Furthermore, the same ad in the approximate same page location in print and on a web page will not be equally visible. Here's why.

In printed publications, ads on a right-hand page usually get more visibility (because of the way people turn pages) than ads on left-hand pages. Ads in the center or outer edges of the right-hand page are more visible than those on the inner edge.

Ads near the front pages of a publication and in the back pages get seen more often than ads in the middle. Ads targeted at particular groups of people (computer users, for instance) are more likely to be noticed by potential customers if they appear on the same or opposite page as articles of interest to that group of people (a computer industry column, for instance) or in a publication dedicated to that particular audience.
