ACTION ITEM: Keep MyFig on Track - L.A. City Council Needs to Hear from You
L.A. City Council Planning & Land Use Committee is considering My Figueroa, which includes the city's first protected bike lane, and we need you there to be heard. As the city's first cycletrack, there is some fear-based opposition to change, which can only be overcome if those that believe in LA's future turn out!
My Figueroa is a complete streets project which transforms an auto-dominated corridor and balances it with transit, bike and pedestrian features. It is the first of Mayor Eric Garcetti's Great Streets. If this project is successful, we could see streets all across Los Angeles transformed to better meet the needs of all who travel on them.
Figueroa is particularly important because it connects so many of LA's great institutions: Expo Park, the Coliseum, the California Science Center, USC, Staples Center & LA Live and all of downtown Los Angeles. These destinations are spread over three miles of currently inhospitable streets. They are too far apart to walk, but perfect for riding a bike. The new Expo Light Rail Line has made getting around by transit so much easier along this corridor, but the last-mile connections would be incomplete without the My Figueroa project.
Almost all other major cities in the U.S. have successfully implemented protected bike lanes along major thoroughfares, giving people mobility options and improving local business with every project. We know that it will work here in LA too, and we're incredibly excited that South LA will be the first community to benefit from this investment in advanced bicycle infrastructure.
We need you! If you want to see better bikeways and complete streets in your community, we need to make sure that the first Great Street in Los Angeles is a success. Please join us:
PLUM Committee
When: Tuesday, January 28; 2:30 p.m.
Where: Los Angeles City Hall, Room 350 - 200 N. Spring St., 90012

Updates from Around L.A. County: Beverly Hills Committee Gives Bike Lanes on Santa Monica Blvd.
Beverly Hills: Good news! Last night the Santa Monica Blvd. Blue Ribbon Committee voted in favor of bike lanes on Santa Monica Blvd. Thanks to Mark Elliot of Better Bike for his work on this and those who showed up to meetings or filled out online comments (97% of online comments were in support of bike lanes).
We'll keep you updated when this heads to City Council!
Los Angeles: The L.A. Department of Transportation (LADOT) Bike Program released its list of Year 2 planned bikeways. The list includes 40 miles of bike lanes to be prioritized and includes extensions on Virgil, the entire length of Hollywood Blvd. (check out our campaign at la-bike.org/RideHollywood), San Vicente Blvd., Barrington, Hoover, and more.
East Hollywood: Bike lanes have been striped on Virgil Ave. between Melrose and Santa Monica. Year 2 bikeways show that extending the bike lanes south to Wilshire and north to Hillhurst/Sunset/Hollywood. Active Streets L.A. Community Event

What's Going On With Bikes in California?
Did you know that all LACBC members are represented on the state level by the California Bicycle Coalition? CalBike is working in tandem with LACBC to enable more people to bicycle, creating safer, healthier and more prosperous communities for all. They are working in Sacramento to triple bicycling in California by 2020. This past year alone, Calbike has won:
- Increased funding for bicycling and walking by 35%, dedicating $129 million each year in a new "Active Transportation Program."
- The "Three Feet for Safety Act!" California joined twenty one other states requiring motorists pass with a safe 3-foot buffer between them and a person riding a bicycle.
To learn more, we urge you to sign up for CalBike's email newsletter! That way, you can learn the latest news about what different bicycle coalitions working on, how laws are changing, and how the bicycling movement is advancing-- directly in your inbox!

Daryl Hannah Captains 7th Annual Los Angeles River Ride
|
In preparation for celebrating our Sweet 16, we've been searching through our archives for visuals that help tell LACBC's story (check out this flier drawn by Joe Linton back in 1998). In a What's Ringing Our Bike Bells / Throwback Thursday mashup, we have this video from 2007 of actress and activist Darryl Hannah on the KTLA Morning News, talking about her role as the Grand Marshal for the 7th Annual L.A. River Ride and why she rides a bike.
