ACTION ITEM: Help Bring Cycletracks to the City of L.A. in 2014

Happy 2014! As a refresher from last fall, this year we at LACBC are calling on the City of Los Angeles to turn its attention to the next generation of bikeways this year. Specifically to:
  • Adopt an "8 to 80" design standard for the Mobility Element's Bicycle-Enhanced Network (BEN) and 2010 Bicycle Plan's Neighborhood Network,
  • Appoint a new LADOT General Manager who is committed to innovative street design,
  • Accelerate implementation of cycletracks by incorporating the BEN into the Mayor's Great Streets Initiative,
  • Install L.A.'s first cycletracks on Figueroa in 2014,
  • Apply for round 2 of the Green Lane Project to receive technical assistance from the nation's leading bikeway design experts,
  • Ensure adequate staffing of the bikeways and pedestrian groups at LADOT to satisfy pent-up demand for these improvements across the city, and
  • Work with Metro to increase investments in next generation bikeways and pedestrian infrastructure across Los Angeles County, concentrated around transit stations and schools.

These steps will expand the reach of LA's bicycle network both geographically and demographically to attract the kind of ridership growth we've seen in other cities around the country that have made similar investments. We must invest and innovate to reach L.A.'s bicycling potential.

Let's add cycletracks to the City of L.A.'s list of new year's resolutions this year!

The deadline for the green lanes project application is coming up soon, and we want to show that cycletracks have support. Help us get to 1,500 signatures by Tuesday, January 14th!

Please sign our petition and tell Mayor Garcetti to Bring Cycletracks to L.A.!
ACTION ITEM: Provide Input on the Santa Monica Blvd. Reconstruction Project
SantaMonicaBlvd

Do you bike, walk, or drive through the Beverly Hills portion of Santa Monica Blvd.? If so, th
en you know how fast cars drive and how difficult it is to walk and bike along this portion.
Help make Santa Monica Blvd. safer and more people-oriented by:
  1. coming to an upcoming meeting
  2. filling out an online comment form
Upcoming Meeting

The third (and likely final) Santa Monica Boulevard Reconstruction Project outreach meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 8 at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Gallery on the second floor of Beverly Hills City Hall. At this meeting, the 15-member appointed blue-ribbon committee will discuss, and possibly make recommendations concerning, project enhancements to the corridor. That might include Class II bicycle lanes (or possibly an adjacent shared-use path).

Santa Monica Blvd. Reconstruction Project Outreach Meeting
When: Wednesday, January 8; 6 p.m.
Where: Beverly Hills City Hall, Municipal Gallery, 2nd Floor - 455 North Rexford Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Anyone interested to see SM Blvd in Beverly Hills become part of the regional bicycle backbone network should express support for bicycle lanes on this segment of the corridor (that would connect existing lanes in West Los Angeles and West Hollywood).

Online Comment Form

Beverly Hills residents, business owners, workers, and visitors are encouraged to fill out a short online form to voice your support for bike lanes and medians. Please fill this out by Wednesday, January 8.

More information about the process and Better Bike notes from the first two meetings can be found here.

If you've been reading this newsletter or following what local LACBC chapter Santa Monica Spoke has been up to, you may have been hearing about Pop-Up MANGo in Santa Monica. What exactly is it? It's a one-day installation demonstrating possible roadway improvements for the Michigan Avenue Neighborhood Greenway, hosted by the City of Santa Monica and Melendrez.

Check out this video from the first installation and learn more about how Michigan Avenue in Santa Monica can be a more people-oriented place.
