ACTION ITEM: Public Safety Committee to Address Hit and Runs Tomorrow Morning
HitAndRuns

The City of Los Angeles' high rate of hit-and-run collisions disproportionately affects bicyclists and pedestrians, the most vulnerable travelers on our city's streets. Many of us have friends left injured by fleeing drivers, or have been victims ourselves. The Los Angeles Police Department, at the direction of Councilmember Joe Buscaino, produced a report with hard numbers confirming our perceptions: nearly 60% of those severely injured or killed by hit-and-run drivers are pedestrians and another 14% are bicyclists.

The Public Safety Committee will hear the LAPD report on Friday, July 26th at 8:30 a.m. in City Hall, Room 1010. Please join LACBC in requesting that the City take a leadership role to fix state law to increase penalties for hit and runs!

Public Safety Committee Meeting
When: Friday, July 26, 8:30 a.m.
Where: Los Angeles City Hall, Room 1010 - 200 N. Spring St., Los Angeles
More info on the LACBC blog.

L.A. Bike Trains will also be leading a special ride from Silver Lake / East Hollywood
When: Friday, July 26; Ride at 7:45 a.m.
Where: Caffe Vita - 4432 W. Sunset Dr., Silver Lake

Greenway 2020 Launches to Connect 51 Miles of the L.A. River Path by the Year 2020

It's a big week for the L.A. River Bike and Pedestrian path. First, it was announced on Tuesday that La Kretz Crossing, connecting Atwater to Griffith Park, would be completed by the end of the year. Then the L.A. River Revitalization Corp. officially launched the Greenway 2020 campaign with a brand new logo!

What is Greenway 2020? Greenway 2020 is a movement bringing together all Angelenos to realize a new vision for the Los Angeles River by the year 2020. The Los Angeles River Revitalization Corp. is spearheading the Greenway 2020 campaign and is working with public and private partners--like LACBC--to complete a continuous 51-mile Greenway adjacent to the LA River by the year 2020. The Greenway will be a public destination worthy of our city-complete with parks, gathering space, and dining amenities.

The L.A. River Corp. revealed the winner of the Greenway 2020 logo contest, and it's Karen Barranco of Special Modern Design!
Bike Updates from Around L.A. County: Lankershim to Get 50 New Bike Racks

North Hollywood:
LACBC's Valley Neighborhood Bike Ambassadors have been working with businesses, residents, and stakeholders on Lankershim to not only bring bike lanes but also other bike improvements (like better bike parking) to the area. As a result of the Ride Lankershim campaign, 50 new bike racks will be installed this summer on Lankershim, helping to make Lankershim a destination that is more welcoming to bicyclists and pedestrians! Read more about it in the NoHo Patch.

Take a FREE Bicycle Safety Class this Summer
Photo: Metro

For the summer of 2013, LACBC and Metro are proud to offer a series of FREE bicycle safety classes. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

LACBC is offering two different classes to choose from. "Street Cycling Skills" is an in-depth 8-hour course that will teach you how to safely ride in all traffic conditions, check your bike for common mechanical problems, and covers a range of bicycle handling skills including emergency maneuvers. "Bicycling on the Road: Need to Know" is a 3-hour class that covers the essentials of safe riding. All classes are lead by certified instructors and include classroom instruction as well as instruction on the bike. All students will receive a free helmet, bike lights, and educational materials. Pre-registration is required for all classes.

Go to our Bicycle Safety Classes page for more details and to register for a class today! Check the website, as well as the "Need to Know" and "Street Cycling Skills" Facebook events, for updates.

Calling All Photographers: We Want Your Photos of Local Bicyclists

We at LACBC are updating some of our materials, and we'd like to use some local photos of folks biking around town. If you have excellent high-resolution photos, please send them to [email protected], and make sure to indicate how you would like to credited for the photo.

We need a great variety of photos: photos of young people, old people, people on road bikes, people on cargo bikes, solo riders, group riders, people using bike lanes or Sharrows, people on streets without bike infrastructure, people in urban areas, people in residential areas, etc.

What we're looking for:
  • high-resolution photos
  • photos of a person or people riding bikes (or at least posing with bikes)
  • photos taken in Los Angeles County
Have questions? Email Carol Feucht at [email protected].
What's Ringing Our Bike Bells: Youth Perspectives on Active Transportation
Los Angeles County Active Transportation Coalition - Youth perspectives on Walking, Bicycling and Riding Transit
Youth perspectives on Walking, Bicycling and Riding Transit

It seems like every month a new article comes out about how fewer young people are driving and owning cars. This is the generation where automobiles don't matter as much and where the youth are making more socially and environmentally conscious decisions. There are many practical reasons why the youth are biking, walking, and using public transportation, and this video from the L.A. County Active Transportation Coalition (of which LACBC is a part of) and Youth Speak Media Solutions gives you some local perspectives.
