Big Things Are Coming in 2013

LACBC has experienced tremendous growth in the past few years in our capacity to work on behalf of all people who ride (or want to ride) in LA County.  2011 was marked by the passage of the much heralded City of Los Angeles Bicycle Plan, which calls for over 1,600 miles of new bicycle facilities over the next 30 years.  Not to be outdone, the County of Los Angeles passed its own  Bicycle Master Plan in 2012, including over 800 miles and a clear mandate for innovative facilities such as cycletracks and bicycle boulevards. Many of the County's other 87 cities are working furiously to catch up with their own bike plans. So with all these plans on the books, what is an advocacy organization to do? Implement!

We resolve to make 2013 an even bigger year for bikes by doubling down on bike projects across the County while bringing new focus to  policy and funding decisions that affect your safety and comfort while riding a bike. In 2013, we'll be kicking off a campaign to triple funding for walking and biking in LA County and to ensure that every transportation project considers people on foot and on bikes.  We'll also continue to work on regionally significant bikeways such as Expo Phase II, the LA River and its tributaries, and others in the works. And, most importantly, we're empowering you to bring change to your own neighborhood through our  local chapters and Neighborhood Bike Ambassadors.

So get involved. Join or renew your  LACBC membership (and recruit a friend). Come to Planning Committee to hear about what's going on around the County every month. Volunteer on a NBA campaign or with your local chapter. And always be on the lookout for Action Alerts in these weekly newsletters.
We have great hopes for 2013. Help us make them a reality.
Activate, Educate, and Calculate: Still Time to Help Us Reach Our Goal of $125,000

Give before January 15th, when our fundraising campaign for Activate, Educate, and Calculate will be closed.

We are so thankful to all of those who donated to this campaign. Thanks to your support, we have raised nearly $50,000. That is just shy of half of the total we need to give each and every angle of these programs our full efforts. LACBC has envisioned Activate, Educate and Calculate as the next logical steps towards capturing the tremendous amount of momentum we gained from 2010-2012. Additionally, your generosity and truly your excitement about all the benefits that these three programs could do for Los Angeles have led to the highest-grossing fundraising campaign that LACBC has ever waged in its recent history. We truly appreciate each and everyone of you, our supporters, in these endeavors.

Please make your donation here.
Welcome to Our Newest LACBC Local Chapter: Downey Bicycle Coalition!

Our regional partnership is growing! Please give a warm welcome to our newest LACBC local chapter, the Downey Bicycle Coalition! Founded by a group of passionate bicyclists in Downey, the DBC was formed to bring bicycle infrastructure to their city. Currently the DBC is focusing on developing community rides, educating the public about safe riding, and pushing city officials to develop a bicycle master plan. If you would like join or learn more, please contact Roger Pardo at [email protected].

You can join this local chapter when you sign up for LACBC membership, at no extra cost to you, and half of your dues will go to the local chapter!
ACTION ITEM: Get Ready to "Ride Figueroa" with NBA East

Ride Figueroa is a LACBC East Bike Ambassador campaign designed to educate and inform Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Cypress Park, Mount Washington, and others about a proposed bike lane on Figueroa between Colorado and San Fernando. This proposed project is part of the 2010 Bicycle Master Plan and is meant to connect to a larger network of bicycle paths, lanes, and routes for everyone to use. This particular project may require the removal of a travel lane to accommodate for these enhancements.

Here are a few ways you can take action:

  1. Join us on a ride and invite your friends! Ride Figueroa! We're working on finalizing a route and date for our Ride Figueroa event. Stay tuned for more info.
  2. Sign our Ride Figueroa petition on change.org - we will deliver these signatures to city staff.
  3. Join our mailing list--please contact Alek Bartrosouf at [email protected] to be placed on our Ride Figueroa mailing list. You will be notified of upcoming meetings, events, and other critical info related to the campaign. Thanks for your help!

For more information about our Ride Figueroa campaign or are interested in volunteering,

feel free to contact Alek Bartrosouf at [email protected] or (213) 629-2142.

Thanks for Joining Us for the LACBC Bike Ride to the Rose Parade

Thanks to all of who joined us for our second annual Ride to the Rose Parade! We started the year off right with a bike ride and a great vantage point from atop the Laemmle Playhouse 7 to view the floats, marching bands, equestrian groups, and other great things that made up the 124 Rose Parade.

Special thanks to LACBC board president Alex Amerri for leading the ride and LACBC board treasurer Greg Laemmle for granting us access to this great view!

You can check out some photos of the ride and parade on the LACBC Facebook page.
Support LACBC on Climate Ride California or NYC-DC 2013

How can you enjoy an incredible 5-day bicycle ride in Northern California or on the East Coast while supporting LACBC? Climate Ride - the nation's largest environmental cycling event and 'green conference on wheels' is coming.

The exciting part for LACBC is that anyone who signs up for the ride gets to choose which organization they will be raising money for - and you can choose LACBC!

First you register, reach the fundraising minimum and train for the ride, then come along and discover why Climate Ride is the premiere green event in the country. Amazing riding, epic scenery, and great speakers all combine to make this a remarkable experience.

Climate Ride California (May 19-23, 2013) is a 5-day, fully-supported bicycle ride from Fortuna to San Francisco under towering redwoods, through the Russian River Wine Country, and along the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route - one of the most scenic coastlines in the world. Join the LACBC Team or make a general team donation.

Climate Ride NYC-DC (Sept. 21-25, 2013) is a grand cycling adventure that connects two of the nation's most important cities - New York and Washington, DC - by bicycle. The ride begins with an exciting departure from Manhattan by ferry, then travels through charming towns in rural New Jersey and Amish Country. The finale is a hero's welcome and rally at the steps of the US Capitol.

Climate Ride also features nightly speakers who focus on bicycle advocacy, sustainability, and renewable energy. If you are interested in forming and joining the NYC-DC team, please contact Kelly Martin at [email protected].

Find out more and register at www.climateride.org. If you have questions about joining the LACBC team or donating to the team, please contact Kelly Martin at [email protected].

What's Ringing Our Bike Bells: 2012 in Bicycle Music
Nicki Bluhm and Tim Bluhm - Stick With Me - Duets (2011)
Nicki Bluhm and Tim Bluhm - Stick With Me - Duets

As you probably know, we at LACBC love a good bicycle music video. When we find a new one (especially a good one), it is highly likely it will end up in this "What's Ringing Our Bike Bells" section. The year 2012 was a particularly a year for bicycle music videos, and Richard Masoner at Cyclelicious has conveniently compiled a list of some bicycle music videos from 2012.

You'll probably recognize Andrew Huang's "Ma Bicyclette" from past newsletters and probably even David Guetta and Sia's "Titanium" video as the most mainstream music video listed (technically from the end of 2011). But be sure to check out some of the other entries, like Irish folk singer Luka Bloom's "The Ride, the" "Do the Wiggle" PSA from San Francisco, and Nicki and Tim Bluhm's "Stick with Me."
