DeKalb County Transportation Plan meetings
DeKalb County is reaching out to residents for input on goals, needs and priorities for the 2014 Comprehensive Transportation Plan. Funding is limited, so please speak up to help ensure that projects important to you are identified as priorities.

The next round of community meetings are scheduled for:
  • Nov. 7, 6:30 - 8:00 PM, 5227 New Peachtree Road, Chamblee
  • Nov. 12  6:30-8:00 PM, 7850 Stonecrest Square, Lithonia
  • Nov. 18  6:30-8:00 PM, 3181 Rainbow Drive, Decatur
Details about meeting locations and transit access are available here.

An interactive online meeting is scheduled for November 14, 6:30 - 8:00 PM. Register here.

At a recent Advisory Committee meeting, we learned that DeKalb residents have ranked four "high" or "extremely high" priorities:
  • Repairing roads - 77%
  • Getting to buses and trains - 71%
  • Walking to destinations - 69%
  • Mobility for residents who don't drive - 69%

PEDS complements DeKalb County for the outstanding job it's doing engaging people who are often poorly served by transportation plans

Welcome Program Manager Ian Sansom
PEDS is thrilled to welcome Ian Sansom to our staff. Ian worked previously on the Atlanta Regional Commission's Lifelong Communities Initiative.

Ian moved to Atlanta in 2012, after receiving a Masters in Community and Regional Planning from the University of New Mexico. He enjoys taking a nightly stroll through his Candler Park neighborhood and is passionate about promoting metro Atlanta's walking revolution. "Increasingly, Atlanta residents place a premium on being able to walk. I'm excited to be part of an organization where everyone is a potential partner."
Golden Shoes: Who's wearing them now?

At our recent Golden Shoe Awards Celebration, PEDS honored people, projects and places that are making metro Atlanta more pedestrian-friendly.  We couldn't make Atlanta walkable without them!

Midtown Alliance leaders Kevin Green,
Shannon Powell and Dan Hourigan

We recognized Midtown Alliance for two terrific projects:
  • Transforming the intersection of Peachtree and Ponce de Leon
  • Creating a safe, convenient crossing to the Midtown MARTA station.

We also recognized

  • Emory Point, a pedestrian-friendly development that brings retail and apartments to Clifton Road;
  • Peggy Berg, who coordinated sidewalk maintenance in Virginia-Highland and exposed red tape in the City of Atlanta's sidewalk maintenance program;
  • East Atlanta Patch, for spotlighting controversial sidewalk policies and opportunities for public input on them;
  • Georgia Tech Center for Traffic Operations and Safety, for its comprehensive sidewalk inventory project.

 Event photos are available online.

PEDS thanks MyAtlTV Promotions Manager John Gerard for serving as Master of Ceremonies, U.S. Micro and other corporate sponsors and the terrific volunteers that helped with the event.

Governor's Office of Highway Safety renews grant to PEDS

The Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety recently renewed its suNew GOHS logopport for PEDS by awarding us a $67,000 grant. We will use these funds to:

  • Educate drivers about their responsibilities to pedestrians
  • Increase awareness of policies and practices that promote pedestrian safety
  • Improve government agencies' responsiveness to pedestrian hazards
  • Promote installation of safe crossings on transit routes

PEDS appreciates the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety's continued partnership as we work together to promote safe streets for pedestrians.
