Show your support for sidewalk maintenance at April 16 meeting
|
The Atlanta City Council's next Sidewalk Task Force meeting is scheduled for April 16 at City Hall. The meeting begins at 5:30 PM and will be in a 2nd floor committee room. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. Videos of the February 14 task force meeting are available online. The second and third parts of the meeting are also worth watching. As you can see, sidewalk issues spark considerable emotion. And overcoming decades of neglect is a tough challenge.
The Task Force has two subcommittees. PEDS' President Sally Flocks chairs the one focused on sidewalk policy reform. Peggy Berg, who leads the Virginia-Highlands Civic Association's Sidewalk Committee, chairs the subcommittee focused on reducing red tape.
At the April 16 meeting, Flocks and Berg will present subcommittee recommendations, submit reports and encourage elected officials to move on with much-needed policy changes.
Please show your support for repairing broken sidewalks by attending the meeting. City council members are willing to contemplate policy change. With your help, we can move them from contemplation to action.

SLOW DOWN! yard signs available at Abbadabba's while they last
|
Thanks to all of you who are helping us encourage drivers to SLOW DOWN! We're delighted to see yard signs in more and more front yards here.
Local governments make it illegal to post signs on public property -- so please do not post signs between the sidewalk and the street, on islands or alongside park property.
If you haven't picked up signs yet, you can do so at any of Abbadabba's stores. We appreciate Abbadabba's generous support for this campaign -- and their ability to expand its reach into Atlanta's suburbs through more convenient distribution points.
Special yard sign distribution in DeKalb County on April 17
PEDS will also distribute SLOW DOWN! signs on Wednesday, April 17 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. We'll be in the parking lot at Suburban Plaza Shopping Center at 2595 N. Decatur Road. Enter the parking lot from N. Decatur Road between Barton Drive and Blackmon Drive and look for a bright yellow hatchback parked near the entrance. Representatives of civic organizations and parent-teacher associations in metro Atlanta may have up to 25 signs to distribute at meetings. Signs are complementary and cannot be sold. Much of the threat to pedestrians comes from speeding cars. Posting SLOW DOWN signs on your street will send a clear message to drivers who treat your neighborhood street like a highway. Thank you for helping us save lives.
