October 30 sidewalk task force meeting
|
At the Atlanta City Council's first Sidewalk Task Force meeting, neighborhood leaders and others joined PEDS in calling for policy change and increased investment in sidewalk maintenance. Minutes are available online.
Co-chairs Natalyn Archibong and Carla Smith created four subcommittees, which will focus on best practices, neighborhood initiatives, financing, and needed legal changes.
We encourage volunteers to serve on one of the subcommittees, where your input can have a big impact. The next meeting task force meeting is tomorrow. Hope you can participate.

Workshop participants design pedestrian safety improvements for S Norcross Tucker Rd
|
At PEDS' recent Designing Streets for Pedestrian Safety workshop, transportation professionals learned best practices for designing streets pedestrians can cross. Evaluation comments included, "great workshop," "excellent training," "good examples from other cities," and "very helpful." Participants found Michael Ronkin's presentations on intersections, medians, road diets and signal timing particularly valuable. The workshop's lead sponsor, Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District, selected the afternoon case study. During break-out sessions, four groups applied tools learned in the day to make a five-lane arterial safer for pedestrians. The Gwinnett Village CID plans to build on concepts sketched during break-out sessions to make an area with heavy pedestrian traffic a safer and more inviting place to walk. We look forward to increased use of medians, midblock crossings, and other safety improvements. PEDS thanks the Gwinnett Village CID, Brand Properties, Pond and Company and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety for the support that made this workshop possible.
