Filing begins Saturday November 9

Filing for public office for the 2014 Democratic Primary will begin this Saturday, November 9th. The DCDP office will be open at (or by) 9:30 AM. If you haven't filed before you might want to look at our Information for Candidates on our Election Facts page. It describes the process. Please note a few things in particular:

It does not matter who files first or how soon you file: ballot position will be determined by a random drawing after filing is over. The first day (and the last day, December 9) may be quite crowded at the office. Don't think you have to get caught in the rush.

You should have already filed a designation of your campaign treasurer with the Texas Ethics Commission (for state offices, including Legislature and state District Judges), or with the Dallas County Elections Department (for local county and precinct offices), or with the Federal Election Commission (for Congress).

You really should have already gotten your filing form notarized and any petitions notarized and made copies of your own form and petitions. If our office is struck by a meteor and destroyed, you can still use those copies with the receipt we give you to get on the primary ballot. (Besides, you may want to contact those voters again....)

We will not be making copies of petitions for opponents to examine until after we check for apparent compliance with requirements. We have up to five days, but it shouldn't take that long -- unless there is a big rush on that first or last day. We would like to scan them so we can email them for free, instead of charging for labor for tedious hand copying.

Precinct Chairs: none of this applies to you. You pay no filing fee, and need no petitions, and have until the same deadline of 6 PM on December 9 to file for your next two-year term. Mail or bring in your notarized form, or come in and we'll notarize one for you. (Please don't try to fax it in, as our machine is temporarily on the blink). More info at our page on Precinct Chairs.

Tell Us Your ACA Health Care Story

We want to hear about your Affordable Care Act story. Have you successfully signed up for coverage under the Affordable Care Act and your insurance costs will be lower than they are now?

Are you being dropped from the Texas Health Insurance Risk Pool and will be signing up for coverage under the Affordable Care Act?

Tell us online at this page, or call the HQ, (214) 821-8331.

Join the DCDP for a
free screening of
American Winter.

The devastating effects of the mortgage lending crisis, unemployment, and budget cuts even before the sequester are presented through the eyes of eight families found through their calls to 211, by Emmy award-winners Harry and Joe Gantz in their latest film American Winter, called "too compelling to ignore" and "powerful and timely".

This summer, families from the film were invited to Washington, D.C., to share their experiences with foreclosure, food insecurity and job loss at a hearing on the future of the middle class with Senators Jeff Merkley and Elizabeth Warren.

Watch a YouTube preview of the film below:

Who's Running?

Still adding new candidates (in both parties) and new sites. After filing really begins for public office in 2014 (that's this Saturday, November 9!), the DCDP will begin posting an official list on our website (as will the Texas party in Austin). Until then, my own totally unofficial tally of announcements (or rumors) with links to websites, updated through today, is at this page. Comment there or email me at that address if you have more or better info and I'll update and correct this day by day. If you aren't there, tell me you're running and you will be on it. Send your website address and I'll link it. If I don't know it, I can't show it.
