Taking Patient Care Personally

Last fall, Tift Regional issued its "What Powers You?" challenge to employees. Since then, hundreds have responded and worn their "Ask What Powers Me" badge buddies with pride. The goal is for patients and visitors to see the card hanging on the staff member's ID badge, prompting them to ask "What Powers You?" Employees can use this opportunity to tell the patient or visitor which person inspires them to be the best, such as a loved one, co-worker, friend or mentor.

Recently, we asked employees what kind of response they have received from the badge buddies and what their typical answer to patients or visitors who ask "What Powers You?". Below are more responses from TRHS employees.

"The first person to ask about my badge buddy was my husband. Without a pause, I said, 'You are what powers me.' My husband, Cal Roach, has been such a giving and caring person in my life. I could not have gone back to school if it were not for him. He encourages me every day to be the best I can be and he has taught me what it means to be a positive example in the lives of others."

Sue Roach, LPN, Radiology Nurse, Tift Regional Medical Center

"I have been asked many times in grocery stores, community events, even by my neighbors. Here's my response: for most of my daddy's adult life, he worked hard to provide for his  family. For most of my adult life, my dad was sick: multiple surgeries, heart attacks, diabetes, and later an abdominal aortic aneurysm.   No matter what the challenge, he stood tall and met it with courage and dignity. He is who powers me."

Beth Ryther, Director of Physician Clinics & Customer Service, Cook Medical Center

Away from Work: Deborah Smith

Deborah Smith, office specialist for HealthPlus, has a hidden talent that not everyone might know about. While away from work, Deborah spends most of her free time making flower arrangements or decorations. Read on to find out more!

When did you get interested in arranging flowers?
I started doing prom flowers when I was 16 years old and it has just spiraled from there ever since.

What is your favorite kind of event to arrange flowers for?

Weddings are my favorite, and second is doing Christmas decorations.

Do you have an actual business or do you it on an as-needed basis?

I do it on an as-needed basis which is pretty much every evening and weekend.

How much of your free time do you use arranging flowers?

Just about every free minute!  I either have a wedding going on, planning for, or some type of decorations for different people on any given day.

Any other information you'd like to include:

I do weddings, receptions, parties, home and office decorations, prom and homecoming flowers and boutonnieres, church arrangements, funeral arrangements, bows of all sizes, just about any kind of flower arranging and decorating there is.

Christmas Fun Facts
santa-with-cookie.jpg
  • Santa Claus is based on St. Nicholas, a fourth century Greek Christian bishop in Turkey famous for his generous gifts to the poor.  The American version of St. Nicholas, or Santa Claus, originally came from the Dutch version called Sint Nikolaas or Sinterklaas.   Dutch settlers brought this tradition to America.
  • Kris Kringle is derived from Christkindl (Christ Child), the traditional Christmas gift bringer in German-speaking countries.  Christkindl dates back to the days of Marin Luther, who sought his own version of St. Nicholas.  The connection with Santa Claus was reinforced in the 1947 film "A Miracle on 34th Street" when Santa was referred to as Kris Kringle.
  • Electric lights were first used on a Christmas tree in 1895.
  • More than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the U.S. each year.
  • Rudolph was actually created by Montgomery Ward in the late 1930s for a holiday promotion.
  • The best-selling Christmas song of all time is "White Christmas" performed by Bing Crosby and the most popular Christmas hymn is "Silent Night" written by Franz Gruber.
  • A common misconception is that the word X-mas is an attempt to take Christ out of Christmas.  In fact, X means Christ in Greek.  X-mas has been used as an abbreviation for Christmas since the mid-1500s.
Fun things to do for the Christmas season
  • Bake Christmas cookies or candy. Deliver to friends and family.
  • Have a Christmas movie marathon, both old and new movies.
  • Make homemade Christmas ornaments and decorations.
  • Drive through Fulwood Park in Tifton to see the Christmas light display, or check out the Festival of Lights at Chehaw Park in Albany or the Fantasy of Lights at Callaway Gardens in Columbus.
  • Attend a candlelight service on Christmas Eve at the church of your choice.
  • On Christmas Eve, visit www.noradsanta.org to view NORAD tracking the worldwide progress of Santa.
  • Do something to help those who are less fortunate.

Updates from Paragon and ICD-10

Paragon: Since the Paragon kick-off in June, much work has taken place. The teams of financial and clinical superusers have been attending classes every week. These classes have been led by McKesson Implementation Consultants who lead the classes onsite at Tift Regional Medical Center. The first class for each Paragon module has been a functional overview with the second and third class for the same module a build training class and then a build validation class.

When the superusers have not been in class, they have been busy reviewing screen design and meeting to discuss workflow concerns. The team effort has been tremendous and is reflective of the spirit at TRHS.

Above are just a few of the clinical superusers who meet regularly with Debbie Brown to review and discuss screen design and discuss workflow issues.

As the end of the year approaches, it is anticipated that 90% of the build for Paragon will be complete. The New Year will bring integrated testing and further validation and completion of the build.   Following this step-Education and training for staff will be scheduled. Thank-you to all of our superusers!

ICD-10: This is a new method of coding the patient's state of health and institutional procedures for billing purposes, case mix indexing, quality, efficiency, and outcome measures, as well as more precise payments. All HIPAA-covered entities, i.e. Healthcare providers, payers, clearinghouses, and billing services, are required to transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 on October 1, 2014. This transition brings a huge change to the healthcare world. TRMC will be providing ICD-10 training over the next 9 months to prepare its staff for the impact it will bring.

Cook Medical Center wins
Patient Safety Award

The Georgia Hospital Association's Hospital Engagement Network (HEN) recently honored Cook Medical Center with the Patient Safety Leaders Circle Award. The HEN recognition program's Patient Safety Leaders Circle shows the hospitals with the  greatest improvement and participation in all Hospital Acquired Conditions improvement activities through the HEN learning collaboratives. In 2013, the aim of the Georgia HEN was to reduce hospital-acquired conditions statewide by 40 percent and hospital re-admissions by 20. Thanks to Cook's leadership and the commitment, the hospital is well on the way to achieving these significant, life-saving goals. Congratulations!

TRMC celebrated and honored lost loved ones at Tree of Life Ceremony

TRMC held the Tree of Life ceremony on December 12. An annual holiday tradition in its 28th year, the Tree of Life is sponsored by the Tifton Junior Woman's Club, raising money for a special fund benefiting patients of the TRMC Oncology Center and Hospice of Tift Area with special needs. With various giving levels, lights for the tree were purchased in memory or honor of a special family member or friend.

The decorative tree was illuminated with a ceremonial pull of the switch by Mrs. Diane Patrick, former Chief Nursing Officer with TRMC. Mrs. Patrick is a four year breast cancer survivor and has been an avid supporter of the Tree of Life for many years.

The evening also featured live holiday music, a poignant candlelight ceremony and a visit from Santa Claus, as well as a free dinner presented by the TRMC Food Services Department. "Real" snow even covered the ground.

TRMC greatly appreciates those who participated in this meaningful event. If you were unable to make a donation, donations to the Tree of Life will continue to be accepted until the end of December. To make a contribution, visit www.tiftregional.com or call the TRMC Outreach and Development Department at (229) 353-6316.

Making an emotional connection for a better patient experience

Emotions determine memories.

Any time we experience something in a heightened emotional state, we're more likely to remember it.   So, consider the patient experience.  Only very satisfied and very dissatisfied patients have a story to tell.

Emotions influence what we remember, how we evaluate encounters.  When we recount a memory, we're sharing the experience of the story we created, not the actual experience.

Undoubtedly, patients can and often do experience the gamut of emotions across the continuum of care: hope, despair, encouragement, confusion, fear, satisfaction, anger, disappointment, safety, loneliness, anxiety, support, depression, relief--just to name a few.

So, how do we intentionally make connections and meet the emotional needs of patients and their families without leaving it to chance?   Think of the memories you want to evoke, then design for those memories.    Look for opportunities to relieve anxiety and anticipate needs or expectations. Design interactions that connect emotionally with patients, foster a sense of control and build trust and relationships.

Every encounter that patients and their family members have with our health system can trigger memory-making and story-creating emotions that fashion patient perceptions.  In the end, the patient's collage of memories forms the patient experience.

Tift Regional receives recognition as a Top 10 Georgia Hospital

For the second year-in-a-row, Georgia Trend magazine named Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC) a top 10 Georgia hospital in its December issue. As part of the magazine's annual hospital rankings section, Georgia Trend listed TRMC number six in the medium-hospital category. TRMC is one of only two medium-size hospitals in south central and southwest Georgia in the top 10. Georgia Trend used publicly available data on quality indicators and patient satisfaction to determine the rankings. Congratulations to TRMC!
