ONE TEAM. ONE GOAL.
The Hawthorne Cat Difference

Welcome to the newly revamped employee newsletter. We've heard your feedback and will strive to improve our employee communications by streamlining the electronic employee newsletters (printed copies available upon request). Take a look at the stories and dig deeper by clicking on hyperlinks. As always, let us know what you think because your opinion counts.

In 1928, Caterpillar and its dealers developed a book that would define their relationship for over 85 years.  The book was called "Across the Table."  It spoke of customer service, local knowledge, family business and "square dealing."

As Hawthorne approaches its 60th year as a Cat dealer, we are embarking on a new journey with Caterpillar.  "Across the Table" has recently been updated to reflect some of the changing times.  Clearly, many things have changed in 85 years; however, the core of our relationship with Caterpillar remains the same.  Hawthorne is a family-owned, customer service business, and has always been focused on treating our employees and our customers like family.

The economy has begun to improve and grow, and our competitors have grown and are trying to regain lost market share.  Our customers are looking to us to maximize up-time and efficiencies.  Unfortunately, brand loyalty has steadily become a thing of the past. The bar has been raised by our competitors and by our customers.  Fortunately, we have positioned ourselves as the industry leader, capitalizing on Caterpillar's quality product, our relationships with our customers and The Hawthorne Cat Difference - our people.

We recently opened a new rental branch in the South Bay area of San Diego County - Hawthorne's first expansion in San Diego since 2007.  In doing so, we were able to promote two of our employees.  Greg Evans, who has been with Hawthorne for 13 years, has taken charge of the Service Department and was integral to the opening of this branch.  Our newly appointed Branch Manager, Armando Arroyo, is a Chula Vista local and has worked at Hawthorne for 17 years.  These opportunities to grow and reinvigorate our market don't come often, so we welcome the opportunity to develop our employees, our values and our partnership with Caterpillar.

Let's continue to work together as One Team and exceed our customers' expectations.

Be your best, win the day.

Keep up the great work.

Hawthorne PRIDE!

Sincerely,

Dave Ness

HAWTHORNE CAT HAWAII
Hosts Undercarriage Training Program

Customers make decisions every day that impact the undercarriage of their Cat equipment. Undercarriage repairs can make up as much as 50 percent of the overall operating costs of owning track-type tractors. Hawthorne identified the need for undercarriage management training as an opportunity to support our customers. On July 14 & July 15, 2014, Hawthorne Cat Hawaii hosted a training to educate customers and employees on how undercarriages work and ways to reduce wear and tear. Additionally, Hawthorne Cat provides tips for maintaining your undercarriage and reducing costs.

The Undercarriage Management Employee and Customer Training was a success. The first day of training consisted of 16 employees from the Hawthorne Cat Hawaii Sales, Rental, Parts and Service Departments. The second day of training included attendees from the who's who in the Hawaii construction industry.  21 representatives from Kiewit, Ameron Hawaii, Nan Inc., Grace Pacific, Hawaiian Cement, Royal Contracting, Goodfellow Bros., Waste Management, Delta Construction, PVT Land Co. and AES Hawaii were in attendance. In total, 37 people attended the training.

Caterpillar's Undercarriage Market Professional, Stan Taylor, shared his valuable undercarriage expertise to help educate attendees and improve business operations. Attendees provided  positive feedback about the event. They highlighted the course material covered and explained how the material

can be used to benefit our customers. Additionally, employees felt the material will improve their ability to provide exceptional customer support.

Hawthorne Cat also received positive feedback from the follow up field visits on July 16 and July 17 at various job sites. Grace Pacific is now more seriously considering track conversion for their Hitachi excavators. AES Hawaii has begun to implement the CTS program as part of their equipment maintenance program. Ameron Hawaii learned the importance of properly operating excavators and dozers to maximize the life of the undercarriage. PVT Land Co.

learned the dangers of operating an excavator on the sprocket and how to avoid spinning the track on dozers. Furthermore, Kiewit found ways to improve by incorporating the information covered in the training.

Customers know that undercarriage wear is inevitable, but now they know Hawthorne Cat is committed to educating them on properly operating and maintaining their equipment. Stan's dedication and passion for undercarriage management and product support also demonstrated Caterpillar's continued commitment to our customers.  View Training Brochure

STEMS | HAWTHORNE SUCCESS STORY
Site Technology + Equipment Management

A Hawthorne Cat customer with a fleet of off-highway trucks was concerned about on-site engine overspeed on level surfaces. Hawthorne and the Los Angeles district developed a solution using digital switch integration, a big differentiator for Cat® Product Link® against the other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Todd Farmer, Service Technical Representative at Caterpillar, teamed with Hawthorne's Product Support Team to find a solution. In this application, a switch was used to alert the customer of engine overspeed.

Hawthorne Cat's technology team responded to a customer's need for advanced data output from Product Link on a rigid body truck. Overspeed can cause premature engine, transmission and tire wear. The ground conditions as well as site turns are designed for lower speeds per appropriate job site needs and regulatory guidelines. In this case, where Hawthorne's team could have installed a digital sensor to a hydraulic line or shaft output, instead they chose a simpler route to the in-cab overspeed sensor.

Hawthorne Cat customers were asked to provide feedback and rank their level of satisfaction from working with Hawthorne. Here are some of the success stories from the Daniels Survey.

"Hawthorne Machinery parts department is very helpful, very efficient and they always have my parts in stock. Eddie Villalpando at the parts counter is great to work with." Ceasar Rosas, PAL General Engineering Inc.

"I have nothing but good things to say about Hawthorne Machinery. Both Mike Closser and Dave Martinez go out of their way to be helpful and I appreciate that." - Mark Schroeder, Carmel Valley Contractors

"Russell at Hawthorne Machinery Parts Counter is very informative and helpful." - Paul Villalobos, City of Escondido

"I would like to commend Matt Higgins for the exceptional attention that he gives to my account. Because of the tremendous service and attention to detail of my account, I have slowly switched over all of my equipment the last several years to Caterpillar primarily because of Matt. He is just phenomenal to work with." - Matt Fleming, Fucali LLC

"I'm pleased with the parts service provided by Frank Drummond at the Lakeside Branch. He is very knowledgeable and without Frank I feel I would not get the same quality service elsewhere." - Rex Danner, Danner Bobcat Service

"Harrison Okabe and Donna Quadra (HRIS HI) make me look like a rock star on the job site. I don't bid out jobs because I want to work with Hawthorne only. They are extremely responsive and I do not have to worry during any step of the rental process." - James Eastores, Pelatron, Inc.
