Histories and Mysteries at the China Grove Roller Mill
For one hundred years, the China Grove Roller Mill was in continuous operation, serving as a meeting place for the agricultural community surrounding the town of China Grove. In its glory, the China Grove Roller Mill could grind 400 pounds of flour every twenty-two minutes. Farmers came from as far away as Charlotte and Harrisburg to mill and sell their grain and purchase farm necessities--all while socializing.

At the Roller Mill Histories and Mysteries Storytelling Open House on Sunday, October 12th, 2:00-4:00 pm, learn more interesting facts about this local landmark. The whole family can enjoy a free afternoon of "Histories and Mysteries" storytelling and refreshments at the China Grove Roller Mill at 308 N. Main Street in China Grove.

Tours of the four-story building and the original mill equipment will be offered throughout the afternoon as well.

This event is sponsored by the China Grove Historical Society and Rowan Public Library.

Harpo Polo's China Today--Living History
Rowan Public Library is pleased to present "Harpo Polo's China Today" with Stephen Sylvester on Thursday, November 6th at 7:00 pm at RPL Headquarters. The program is free and all are welcome.

In 1271, 17-year-old Marco Polo traveled from Venice across Asia into China, later introducing his fellow Europeans to a very different culture. As "Harpo Polo" Sylvester shares his observations on China's metamorphosis from an ancient culture to a modern one. He explores  the end of the dynasties, the nationalist period, the leadership of Chairman Mao through the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, and the changes wrought by China joining the world as a modern economy. What does it all mean to China and to the West?

Sylvester served as chief academic officer at Lassen College in California, the University of Hawaii West Oahu, and Director of Matanuska/Susitna College in Alaska. He currently teaches history and international relations as a visiting professor at Shandong University in Jinan, China.

Please join us Thursday November 6th at 7:00 pm. This program is made possible by the RCCC Humanities Department.

RPL is Excited to Offer Digital Library Cards!
Digital Library Cards will increase accessibility to online resources for area residents, especially students who have received one to one devices from the Rowan Salisbury Schools as well as individuals who use their own devices in our libraries. The library's goal is to reach out to patrons who are utilizing the digital world on a daily basis, including individuals who do not want or are not able to come into our brick and mortar locations. This initiative began as a way to increase service to students in the Rowan Salisbury School System who have or will be receiving one to one digital devices and to support the emphasis in our business community on increasing student literacy.

A Digital Library Borrower will have access to everything online that is already accessible to our regular Library Patrons. The Digital Library Borrower will sign up through the Rowan Public Library website and will instantly be entered into the database.Within a few minutes  they can access NC Live, Zinio, NC Digital Library, and all the other great resources available through online tools.  The Borrower will be responsible for keeping up with the number and the PIN associated with it.  Due to the nature of digital information and resources, the user nor the library faces any financial liability for items that are checked out/downloaded. Digital Library Borrowers will not be able to check out DVDs or print materials unless they acquire a traditional card.

The Rowan Salisbury School system is spreading the word about this exciting opportunity.  The information has also been shared with the North Carolina Public Library Director's Association.  Libraries across North Carolina will be watching to see how this project impacts our outreach to the digital world.
