Darrell Connor and the
Country Music Legends Band

Join us Thursday, August 28th at 7:00 pm at RPL Headquarters for Darrell Connor and the Country Music Legends Band. The program is free and all are welcome.

This concert is part of our Cheerwine Music Hour, co-sponsored by the Friends of Rowan Public Library. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Crowd favorite Darrell Connor leads a group of talented musicians who love to play music and make people smile. They have rubbed elbows with George Hamilton IV and the late great Don Helms, who played with Hank Williams.

Connor and fellow band members Patrick Carman, Fred Carpenter, Jack Kee, G.W. Saunders, and Larry Tucker pride themselves on the quality of music they play and write. Connor plays lead and rhythm guitar, 10-string pedal steel guitar, banjo and bass. The band describes their performance as playing the best of Country, Bluegrass, and Gospel with a little Rock and Roll and Beach.

Please join us Thursday, August 28th. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the show starts at 7:00 pm.

Ramble Through Rowan's History: Courage and Conflict
DVD copies of the film 'Courage & Conflict: Rowan in the Civil War' are now available to check out at all library locations, and are also on sale for $10.00 each. The film is the seventh episode in the 'Ramble Through Rowan's History' series of short videos about the history of Rowan County's people, places, and events. RPL hosted a special premier screening of the film earlier this year.

'Courage and Conflict' describes the events and effects of the American Civil War on the people of Rowan County. From the formation of antebellum militia units to the final raid by General Stoneman, the video looks at the combatants on the battlefield as well as the folks at home. Rowan spent four conflicted years as both a Confederate support center and a Unionist stronghold.

In addition to checkout or purchase options, the film can be viewed online. Visit www.rowanpubliclibrary.org and click on history room. From there, choose 'browse resources' and then  'digital exhibits/Ramble Through Rowan.'

Summer Reading Wrap-up
Rowan Public Library's Summer Reading program, 'Fizz, Boom, Read!' started a week after school ended with the annual summer reading kick-off events. By mid-July, over 1,950 Rowan County youngsters had registered with an average of 1,300 visiting a library location every week to enjoy programs centered on science.

The youngest children were treated to original programs which included weather reports, singing, counting, and active storytelling. Programs for 3-5 year olds taught them about a variety of animals, dental hygiene and using the five senses. School aged children were treated to storytellers, puppeteers and magicians including scientific explanations of how certain 'magic' tricks really work.

The 'Spark a Reaction' teen summer reading program featured teens learning to make their own trebuchets, paper rockets, fingerprints, and lava lamps. Teens also observed a variety of chemical reactions, solved crime scene puzzles, and tested their scientific knowledge in the ever popular Game Show Challenge. The program wraps up with a Blow Out Bash where teens spend their library dollars on raffle tickets for prizes.

Thanks to the Friends of Rowan Public Library who generously fund RPL's summer reading programs!
