Council Wide Announcements & Calendar

Cub Scout Fall Sign Up Night
ALL Cub Scout Leaders should have August 25th circled on their calendars! From 6:30-8 pm all elementary schools across Sagamore Council will host an opportunity for new families to join Cub Scouts. Units should be expecting communication from their Field Staff or District Membership Chairs on issues like reservations, boy talk scheduling, and other logistical items. Units are also reminded that on this night parents are expecting to receive a pack calendar, contact sheet for their leaders, and information about the financial commitment for Scouting.
Sagamore Council has purchased rockets to be used as a promotional item for all new Scouts who sign up on August 25th, parent orientation guides, yard signs, school fliers, posters, and other items to help promote the upcoming membership sign up night. Packs should prepare by making sure a pack calendar, contact sheet, and financial commitment information will be ready to give to families as we deliver the Scouting Program to thousands of new across the Sagamore Council!
Eagle Life Statement
Are you, or someone you know, preparing for your Eagle Scout Board of Review? One of the trickiest requirements is what's commonly referred to as the Eagle Life Statement. This requirement results in a wide variety of letters as you can imagine! Volunteers in charge of advancement on the district and council levels, along with staff, have developed a set of guidelines to help you produce the best possible letter. It reads as a rubric for a paper, a familiar item for many boys in school that should be relatable. The Letter Of Ambition Guidelines are available here.

Unit Visits Available - Message from Sherry Brady
As part of my new role with Sagamore Council as the Unit Finance/Support Director, I'm available for unit visits. What dfoes that entail you ask? I could help you establish a program plan and budget, evaluate your recruitment process, provide resources to evaluate your families, answer questions about tour plans, insurance needs, adult leadership and training and service hours as well as establish a fundraising model. If your unit would like to schedule a unit visit or you are part of a new unit and have a group of leaders that would benefit from a Q&A session, let's schedule an appointment. I may not have all the answers, but if needed I'll research to find answers to your questions if I'm unable to answer them at our visit. You can email me at [email protected] or call 765-480-4630.

Marketing MinuteWe're looking for YOUR help in marketing YOUR Council. Now that the windows at the Council Service Center have been replaced, we intend to "re-wrap" them with new Scouting photos that will again be visible from outside. We are looking for some good high-quality photos of local Scouts in action. We need about seven photos to cover the windows.
Does anyone in your unit have some good action photos of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity or Venturers in action that we could use for our project? If so, please email them to [email protected] before June 15, 2016. Please get the permission to use the photo by using the talent release form (found at http://www.scouting.org/filestore/marketing/doc/talent.doc ). We will notify the ones whose photos we select to use in the project. Don't forget to continue to #ShareSagamoreSuccess by sending your unit's news and pictures to your local newspaper. Let your communities know that Scouting lasts all year and the fun doesn't end! Have your Scouts invite their friends to meetings and even visit at camp to see how to #BuildAnAdventure in Scouting!
We love the material you are posting on our Facebook page - keep it coming!! Thank you for your help, and thank you as you #ShareSagamoreSuccess!!

Leaders - Your Scout Families Need Your Help
If your units attend camp or offer high adventure programs like the upcoming 2017 National Jamboree, then there is a need for funds involved. How many of your families have financial struggles or would like their Scout to learn the concept of earning his own way to camp? Product sales and fundraising is what they need! Support your Council fundraiser and offer your families the opportunity to build their finances in order to provide these opportunities for their Scouts to experience adventure in the great outdoors while learning life and leadership skills that they will take with them into the future!
Do it together - offer to set up a booth for your unit at a community festival or farmers market (always obtain approval and appropriate authorization). You could then: Educate your community on Scouting and what it has to offer Offer a game Use as a recruitment opportunity Sell camp cards or excess 2015 popcorn inventory.
Arrange to set up a booth at the Mall or at Marsh grocery and sell camp cards as already prospective buyers are entering. Many will support you and use their Marsh snap-off cards immediately, creating a win-win situation for both parties. As the weather is warming up, approach race tracks and sports events to see if they'll allow you to sell excess 2015 popcorn inventory. Don't burn your families out on selling popcorn outside of the normal sale period, but maybe offer one or two activities where several Scouts who have expressed a financial need/hardship a chance to earn their own way with product sales.
If your unit is interested in selling camp cards or 2015 popcorn inventory, contact Sherry at [email protected] or 765-452-8253.

CampMaster Event Registration Tips
For both Boy Scout and Cub Scout summer camps, you will need to specify the t-shirt size with each participant's information. This is different from in the past when you only needed to specify how many you needed of each size. How to Specify T-Shirt Sizes for Camps in CampMaster. Keep in mind that you must increase your commitment number(s) before you can enter additional participants. Fees are calculated using the commitment numbers for your reservation. Campership payments are being processed and entered in CampMaster, but in a few instances we are unable to enter them because we are missing information required by CampMaster. If you do not see your unit's camperships reflected in CampMaster, please call the office at 765-452-8253 or 800-844-0537. Once the camperships have been entered you may check your balance and make your final payment. For Boy Scout Summer Camp:
If you cannot find a merit badge class in your selection list, either the class is already filled to capacity or there is a conflict between the class selections. For example, the Welding merit badge course includes an afternoon lab on Thursday. A Scout who has signed up for Welding will not be able to get into the afternoon archery class because it conflicts with the Welding lab on Thursday. Once scheduling for Boy Scout summer camp has closed (June 1, 2016), then a process will be run to assign the Scouts to the times the classes will meet. This process will allow you to print a schedule for a Scout. Payments can be made on-line via credit cards or e-checks. This makes it convenient for you to make your payments on time. |
Fees:The Early Bird fee deadline for summer camp at Camp Buffalo has passed, and the regular fees are in effect. The fee for youth is $260 and fee for adults is $100. Payments can be made on-line via credit cards or e-checks via CampMaster.

Popcorn Sale 2016 Updates

This year the date for Scouting for Food is being left up to units. You can have your food drive when it best fits into your calendar and benefits most the food bank your unit supports. We need each unit to fill out a request form for bags and stickers. Once your unit has completed their food drive it is very important that you turn in the Scouting for Food report. The sponsor of this program wants to know how many Scouts and Scouters participate, the amount of time they give, and the amount of food collected. Whether your unit has its food drive in the spring, summer, or fall, what matters is that we as Scouts are serving those who need assistance. Lodge Updates
Go check out our updated website www.takachsin.org. Our webmaster, Vicki Triplett, has done a really nice job on our website. It has new information on it and should be the first place you look when you want to know what is going on in Takachsin Lodge. If you have not been getting email updates from the lodge we may not have the correct email listed for you. Please email Steve Bowman at [email protected] to update your contact information. Spring Ordeal RECAP
The Spring Ordeal was held on May 13-16 at Cary Camp. This weekend was filled with fun, fellowship and cheerful service. We gained 12 new OA members and 15 new Brotherhood members. The ceremony teams did an amazing job and the OA ring looked wonderful. We got a lot accomplished with the service projects, including brush trimming along the outside of camp, fence posts for the new pool fence, and cleanup around the storage shed. Despite the less than ideal weather, it was a great weekend for all those who attended.
Fall Ordeal
The Fall Ordeal is scheduled for August 12-14th at Camp Buffalo and planning has begun for the meals, games and projects. We are excited to see how many new candidates and brotherhood we will receive. This is NOT just for ordeal candidates but for our whole lodge. We are the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service but we have a lot of fun and fellowship along the way. If you are willing to be an elangomat, please email Steve Bowman at [email protected]. If you are an ordeal member, you can seal your bonds into the Order of the Arrow by taking your brotherhood. There will be classes offered to assist you in passing the things you need to know for brotherhood. If you go to www.takachsin.org you will find the brotherhood information you need under "Forms". Please plan to join us for a great weekend at Camp Buffalo. Membership Dues
Members if you have not yet paid your 2016 dues yet now is the time to do so. Membership is $12 and can be paid at the council office, at any OA event or on Campmaster. Members who do not pay their dues by January 31 may be placed on the inactive file and their names removed from the mailing list. Members on the inactive list may not wear on their uniform any identification or insignia for Takachsin Lodge #173 and may not participate in OA events. Inactive members may restore their active membership by paying the dues for the current year.
