Wilderness First Aid Course

It's hard to believe but it's that time of year again when Scouts and Scouters of all ages will be heading off to the backwoods and waterways looking for high adventure.  As we all know BSA requires that a few individuals be trained and certified in Wilderness First Aid.  The weekend of April 15 a total of 8 scouts & scouters completed a Sagamore Council sponsored Wilderness First Aid course at Cary camp in Lafayette.  The group consisted of individuals from Lafayette, Fowler, Bunker Hill, and North Manchester, Indiana.  The course ran 16 hours in length and covered everything from scene size up, patient assessment, bandaging & splinting. It then continued on with both medical and trauma related topics.  The highlight of Saturday afternoon was an on sight scene landing by a STAT Flight helicopter crew.  The Stat Flight crew was able to spend a couple of hours answering all types of questions ranging from their individual training to what information they need from a ground rescue crew when they call for assistance.

Sagamore Council has the ability to conduct this training course on an as needed basis.  If there are still any groups getting ready to head out for high adventures in the next couple of months and are deficient in this training, please contact Chas Triplett at the Sagamore Council office in Kokomo.

The course director and primary instructor is Darrell Clase.  Darrell is the Director of Tippecanoe County Emergency Medical Services and also Council Commissioner for Sagamore Council.

Scouting for Food 2016

This year the date for Scouting for Food is being left up to units. You can have your food drive when it best fits into your calendar and benefits most the food bank your unit supports. We need each unit to fill out a request form for bags and stickers. Once your unit has completed their food drive it is very important that you turn in the Scouting for Food report. The sponsor of this program wants to know how many Scouts and Scouters participate, the amount of time they give, and the amount of food collected. Whether your unit has its food drive in the spring, summer, or fall, what matters is that we as Scouts are serving those who need assistance.

Kokomo units are requested to coordinate their food drives with the postal carriers and United Way in May. Scroll down to Peshewa section of this email to see details and contact information.

North Star District News from Jason Revord:

The 2016 Gutwein Friends of Scouting Golf Outing is still accepting new teams, so come join us for a day of fun in the sun May 7th at Pine View Golf Course in lovely Monticello, Indiana.  The cost for a team of four is $200, and single players will also be accepted for $50 per person.  Registration begins at noon, and tee off will begin around 1:00 PM.  There will be various door prizes and rewards for the top teams.  If you are a far better shot than I am you could win a brand new car or a fabulous vacation getaway for making a hole in 1!  All proceeds will go to help fund your local Scouting programs.  Registration is available on CampMaster. I hope to see you there!

Come one, come all to the Super District Dinner/Program Kickoff/Membership Kickoff on May 21st at the First Presbyterian Church in Monticello.  With so much going on, this is an event you're not going to want to miss, and the best part is that this event is going to be entirely FREE!  That is correct -- this event is going to be generously sponsored by the Sagamore Council Membership Committee and will include a pulled pork dinner with green beans and a dessert.  Information will be handed out for all of the next Scouting year's events and the chair for each district committee will have a booth ready to discuss your unit needs in all areas from membership, training, camping, advancement and popcorn/finance. Units will receive help setting up an Ideal Year of Scouting calendar.  In the course of a couple hours your unit could be well on the way to earning full popcorn commission.  After dinner there will be an awards ceremony to honor some volunteers who have really distinguished themselves in their service during the past year.  Although all adults are welcome to attend, please register on CampMaster by May 17th to reserve a meal.
